Long And Short Of It

Well, after much debate and years of letting my hair grow long, I have chopped it off. Very few reading this will remember back when my blog was young and I had a similar bob haircut and wore my glasses nearly every day. New haircuts are such strange things and I've been feeling very light-headed, but it is nice to have a change. I was also able to donate my hair, so that was a comforting thought as my hair stylist gleefully cut away. It was a funny moment; one of my goals in growing my hair out was to be able to wear it in braids and then there I sat having my braid cut off. Anyway, nothing too intelligible to say on the whole situation--I'm still processing. My mother took these pictures for me, a few quick "before snaps" on the street where I live (some joggers ran by and yelled "smile!" which is a huge pet peeve of mine) and then we snapped a few "after" pictures in the same spot when I got home.

Aaaah so you've finally done it!
I remember being impressed when I saw you passing in the street in Saint Germain, and what beautiful long red hair!
These two hairstyles suit you really well, anyway you are pretty! I like both!
And it's funny how you look like a character I often draw, with this short red hairstyle! *3*

as I said on tumblr: when people get a great haircut, it looks as if they always had their hair like this, as if it is their signature look that they finally found. Their soulmate, hairwise. This totally looks like that: love it!

You. Look. Incredible.

Katlyn said...

Though I can't imagine myself in short hair, you look so cute in this new haircut. In fact you look good in both previous and current hair styles.

The place you living is lovely by the way.

Fabulous as always!

It is perfect!Although your hair was beautiful, it was always hiding some awesome detail of your clothes. Now it frames your face so you can see how gorgeous you are AND it isn't covering your lovely wardrobe. I hope you feel like you made the right decision, because it seems perfect to me!

You are always beautiful Rebecca! :D I remember your old hair style similar to this new look! I followed you on Flickr :)

love the new cut! i'm in the same boat, been growing my hair out for some time now and i'm rather attached to it, well emotionally as well as physically, but i cant stop thinking about chopping it short. anyways it looks great! you can still do tiny braids and stick bows in it :-)

LOVE IT!! I think we were in similar hair situations, I grew out my bob too and am soooo tempted to cut it again. Seeing you looking all kinds of adorable here isnt helping me!

Long or short your hair looks so beautiful with the gorgeous colour and sheen. I cut my hair short half a year ago and the only qualm I have is that I can't play around with it as much.

LOVE IT! I think it was time for a change, and it looks great. I used to have super-long hair (to my knees) and it was ridiculous, but hard to let go of. I cut it up to my waist and then a few years later I pulled a bob like yours. I think it takes a little while to realize that it always grows back! Now I just keep growing it out for a while then chopping it again. It's so much more fun that way. And you might not be able to do heidi braids with a bob but there are so many other cute things you can do with shorter hair. I bet your rag curls would look really good with a bob. And hats too. Personally I can't pull of a hat with long hair.

DelbaMé said...

OH MY GOSSHHH! I LOVE IT! You definitely had gorgeous hair before but the bob is sooo cute and your red hair is so striking!!! It's great that you donated it too!! Did you get emotional?!(I know it's just hair, but sometimes there's an attachment!) haha. Just lovely.

When you tweeted about it, I was very surprised. But yes, I do remember 3+ years ago, your hair was MUCH, MUCH shorter than now. You used to also wear your glasses in most photos. :) Ahh, the days long gone by!

The hair cut is very chic! I love, love it! You look mature and sophisticated, and somehow your hair is much more vibrant! (Could also be the ISO/Aperture settings on your camera that day, but you look very Pantene-y.)

Oh gosh i remember i did that two years ago. From a very long hair to a very short one. You look young on your new hair. And still look pretty.

Katie Burgoon said...

WOW! It looks so different, but it's lovely! You kind of make me want to go chop mine off now... ;]

Peacock's Hat said...

Oh my its gorgeous! But this is bad since these pictures convince me more to chop mine into a bob when I've been growing it out from a similar hack into a crop several years ago! I'm also trying to grow out a particularly annoying top layer but am trying to be patient.

Vanessa :P said...

I like the before/after!
I always do that every few years: grow it long, chop it short and donate it. It always takes some getting used to.
It looks good! Very flapper "Louise Brooks"-y.

I think you look great in both pictures but I really love it short. It's so striking and structured! Fabulous!!

Ah, cute! I like it. And that's really awesome that you were able to donate your hair!

I'm a portrait photographer, and I hate when I'm out shooting on location and people walk by and say "Smile!" at my model/client and do other things like that.

It looks lovely! The shorter hair brings out the color of your eyes so much, and they're also lovely, so it's a great match! I can't wait to see how the rest of your wardrobe looks with the new cut.

I love it! I think you look so much more grown-up now, but in a good way! I have longer hair now too, and I want to donate it too. But I'm going to enjoy it just for a little longer now :)

Oh, what a perfect hairstyle for you! it really highlights your lovely, expressive eyes. You look like silent film star Colleen Moore (you really do! google her and see).

I think everyone's already said it, but I'll say it again - you look fabulous!!! This post came at such a strange time because I was just discussing chopping off my hair. [It's about as long as yours in the first picture.] Anyways, I think I'm really going to do it in the next few months. Hopefully it comes out as nice as yours. But one question - can you pull it out of your face fairly easily?

anahita said...

ooh I like! I remember back when you had short hair - was very cute (slightly more purple though!) it makes a nice change and it'll always grow again :)

WendyB said...

Wow, what a difference! It looks great either way!

marice said...

looks a lot like amanda seyfried's in her upcoming movie.

changes are good :)

i'm planning to grow my hair. been cutting it short for a while now so planning to have my long hair back and try some curls. :)

Sarah said...

Oh my gosh you really did cut it off! Wow, what a change. It looks fab though, really healthy and it frames your face beautifully. I love the colour too, it's the colour I'm always trying to get for my hair. You look gorgeous!

anna said...

To the above comment (Marice),

I was just about to say that! You do remind me of Amanda Seyfried because the hair is very similar. Looks great on you! Very transforming. I loved the before but I also love the after! I wonder how this will affect your outfits from now on because you look so different!

Meesh said...

Really cute! I do the same thing every other year--grow my hair super long, then cut it all off once I'm sick of it. Keeps things interesting.

Sarah said...

I love it looks great! I could not bear to chop my long locks off, short hair does not suit me :( x

Sydney said...

I've been jealous of your long hair for a while, but now I am jealous of your short hair! Very cute.

kater said...

Oh lady, you look wonderful! You have really gorgeous, enviable hair, and so it looks really great long, but I think this cut suits your face so, so well! It's really quite perfect on you! So, so pretty!

It's funny, because I remember when you had shorter hair back in the day! I always think oh my, how FAST your hair has grown, and then I realize, it's been like, three or four years!

Ha! I just wrote a blog post (FINALLY) about my drastic haircut as well. It feels like a literal weight has been lifted, no? I felt 10lbs lighter after getting it all cut off. Anyway, love the new haircut; it really suits you!

Not that the long hair didn't suit you - but the bob looks GREAT on you! :) Love the feeling of having short hair..! :) Enjoy it!

Thank you everyone for the sweet comments! I'm pleasantly surprised everyone likes the bob so much! I'm still adjusting to it myself. :)

Your hair looks beautiful! I have similar hair to you (I henna mine red) and have always cycled between growing my hair very long and cutting it off every few years. Right now I am keeping it short though I miss being able to style it. I work at the school district I graduated from and at 22 am the youngest employee, and I think the bob really helps me look older. Too much hair and I could be a teenager. I know you've mentioned when people say you look young for your age; maybe the haircut will change that?

Sarah K. said...

oh my gosh I LOVE it! I've been itching to chop my hair off too, but it's just taken me soooo long to grow it this far, and it's not even that long yet... but yours looks so great! makes me want to cut mine even more.

Rebecca, your former long hair looked gorgeous and bohemian. Your new bob looks gorgeous and a little mod. I'd say you just can't loose.

your hair looks darling! one thing i enjoy about reading blogs is watching people's hair grow longer. i always admired your hair, you have a beautiful color and your waves were always perfect. (did you ever style your hair or just let it flow naturally?)

a few months ago i chopped off my hair. it was about as long as yours was. but my ends were so dead and gross i just wanted to start over again. i always cut my hair myself because hair stylists never do it quite the way i want them to, and if i mess up i only have myself to blame and i learn what not to do next time.

love the NYFW photos! i'm going to have to check out your tumblr :)

I think it looks so fresh, a great new beginning if you ask me. The color also looks brighter, and shinier. Did you dye it after the cut? I can't tell... but it looks really healthy

Love your bob! And I love that you donated your hair. I recently did the same. I've been following you since I found your Flickr wardrobe remix posts when you last had short hair and took outfit pictures in your dorm room. I started following you because I liked that we had a similar hair style (haha), and I had just chopped mine off at the time. You have certainly come a long way since then! I love your blog and outfit posts.

It looks great! Very chic. I bet your head feels really strange. I had a similar drastic cut a few years ago and it took me ages to stop trying to untuck hair that wasn't there from jacket collars and such-like.

Ashe @ Dramatis Personae said...

Ah! I'm one of those few who remember it from back in the day.

Somehow this version DOES make you look more polished, and a bit more sophisticated, but that's not a bad thing... like it makes you look a bit older (or perhaps your age is a better way of saying it?).

It looks great!
