Desolate Shore With Its Mighty Swell

This slightly belated summer is pretty wonderful. I haven't been to a sandy beach in ages, so it is pretty exciting to now live within walking distance of one. I came out here the other evening just at sunset and saw a pod of dolphins. It was really incredible and is making me excited about this place...although shortly after I took these pictures a tropical storm rolled in and abruptly ended my time in the sun. Which means I am currently holed up in a hotel room while rain blasts outside.

Gorgeous images. One the best things about being British is that you are never really that far from a beach. I can visit them sun, rain or snow, always beautiful

Beautiful! One reason of many to love Virginia... although it's been summery up here in Massachusetts, too. Storm's rolling in tonight!

you take such great shots. I would love to live that close to a beach, you are very lucky

You are brave to take your camera to the beach with the tripod in the sand! It gets so windy here that I'm always afraid of getting sand in the camera. But these pictures look wonderful, always nice to see your area from a different perspective! I really love the back of this dress, very unique.

Such a beautiful beach! It makes me miss my lovely shores of PEI while I'm currently landlocked on the prairies..

That dress is really pretty - but what I love most (other than the ocean of course) are those lovely rings! So pretty.

These shots are stunning! I love the close up of the shoes and the pic of you far off down the beach. It looks like you had fun capturing the pictures as well. - Katy

Oh I am loving the new location more and more since you're so near a beach now! You're never too far from water are you? You had a lake and now you have a whole ocean to have as your backdrop! I'm excited for you too!

Thanks for all of your advice lately. Since you're a world traveler and forced to move every few years anyway, you've obviously had to learn to adapt to anything and therefore your advice is some of the best. In response to your comment about Anti-American feelings, I agree that it's best to be the exact opposite of the American stereotype. I try not so say anything too ignorant or arrogant, I hope and if I don't know anything about a country/culture I will ask even if it means I get caught up in a pointless debate about British Labour party politics I fail to comprehend at least it shows I'm interested. I'm just trying not to make the 3 crucial Americans abroad mistakes: 1. acting like an ugly American 2. Hating on my own country (that can definitely backfire) 3. only hanging out with other Americans (too easy and not really venturing out). I think my attempt to avoid all 3 means that it's a steeper learning curve over here, but at least I'm learning now.

And thanks for your socialization comments. You're right, I've been overthinking things, mostly because I've been stupidly comparing myself to other people (and usually when you look below the surface of those people's social lives you see that they're not as great as they seem to be. Like my flatmate has met a lot of new people, but barely hung out with them.) and also I've been sick/busy reading all week long and prone to crabbiness. So I will try to take it slowly now.

welcome to Virginia! You'll soon learn just how bipolar the weather is. not only can it go from sunny to a tropical storm in a matter of minutes, but we can start the week out with a blizzard and end it in 70 degree weather.
