That's such a cool idea. It is frustrating when different brands have different concepts of what a "2" is or a "4." I'm like, I don't care what number is on the tag, I just want it to fit, dang it!
This dress suits you perfectly, and that cut out is adorable, I've been wanting a heart cut out dress since spring started. I might just have to DIY it!

Hmm, that is a really interesting idea to assign colors instead of numbers. I really like it! Because even though I wear several sizes due to sizing inconsistency between brands, I always look at the largest size and think "Oh my goodness they think I'm a size 9358409534 WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME". Ha, ha. Or with the whole S, M, L, XL... I have shirts in ALL of those sizes! What does that mean?!? So basically, I think the color idea is genius.

Your outfit is quite lovely. I really like the print on your dress—it is definitely reminiscent of some vintage 1960s prints I've seen. I love the heart cut in the back, although I suppose this makes it impossible to wear a bra with? Anyways, lovely. :]

i love the outfit, but most of all, i LOVE that Be Yourself is one of your sponsors, because I'm from Omaha (where the store, and their sister shop The Giving Tree, are located) and i LOVE their size concept, its so refreshing and such a self esteem booster. And, Omaha is pretty awesome, too :)

I love that dress (the back is great!), though when I went on the site it was pretty hard to navigate. I like the concept of breaking the traditional sizes though. For that I'm going to give it a chance to grow on me.

I love the heart cutout! It's whimsical and unexpected. Also love the shoes, especially the way the ribbon is looped up the shoe (did that make sense?).

That dress is perfect, and I love the back - of course!

The idea of coloring our body-types, instead of sizing it, is wonderful! I'll head over there and have a look, that's for sure.

I'm kind of confused by this site. I do like the idea that they refit and relabel the sizing of all the dresses on their website by a specific standard. But I don't understand how the color system is supposed to "boost self-esteem" when it seems that the majority of the dresses on the site don't come bigger than a "black" (or a size 8). I looked at several dresses whose silhouettes would probably be flattering on my body type, but the majority of the sizes ran small. Is it supposed to make people bigger than a size 8 feel better when the dress is only available in "purple", "green", and "black" rather than 4, 6, and 8? And in my browsing I definitely didn't see anything bigger than a size "orange" (12-14), although I may have missed one or two items (another note: the website should have a way of browsing dresses by size color).

It seems like they spout a lot of empty rhetoric - I agree with their message, but they don't seem to be able to back it up by offering their clothing in a variety of sizes. I know they're a small, new company, but there's an untapped market of girls out there who are bigger than a size 8 or 10 who are willing to spend good money on these cute dresses! And they seem to at least acknowledge that the "media and clothing designers have had a negative effect on fashion", but the best way to combat that would be to actually provide clothes in a variety of sizes rather than simply give different names to the same sizeism apparent in the rest of the fashion industry.

As such, I will continue to lovingly gaze at cute vintage-style dresses from this and many other sites without being able to purchase any of them. Sigh.

You dress is gorgeous and that is such a wonderful idea for a shop. Although, I do agree with the above comment, from "N". I don't see how the color system is supposed to raise self esteem, when it's just assigning a color to the already established sizes. They have adorable dresses though.

Rebecca, The Clothes Horse said...

@N, I definitely see what you're saying, but they're actually more of a physical store than an online one--perhaps the experience of the shop firsthand would be entirely different and they might offer more sizes there.
I didn't want this post to be extremely long, but the online store is new and definitely needs some improvement. I will definitely be sharing feedback from my commenters with the store owners, so feel free to chip in other ideas you have for improvement. I agree with some browseing improvements and navigation, but again new site=growing pains.
I think the idea of colors is what I stated before: to get us off the idea of numbers. I know I'd rather consider myself a color than a number, perhaps it is mere rhetoric and psychological, but it does make me feel better...so I personally don't find that empty (but not everyone will have the same experience). I also have noticed their stock is low in a number of sizes; I can't say for certain if this is b/c they don't carry those sizes b/c they also didn't have mine in several pieces. But I will definitely pass that feedback along.
From shopping there I can say sizes do not run small (perhaps you mean they carry mostly small ones?); all I know is the piece I chose ran true to size labeled.

I have the exact same dress, but it is peach and I got it from Ruche. I just love the way that it shows off your adorable tattoos. By the way, you have the nicest tattoos in all of the universe. I wish I had thought of them, but now that I know you have it, I feel like a lameo, getting the same ink.

Fantastic dress and shop! I booked marked the site and then realized that a high percentage of the shops I've bookmarked probably have come from following links on your blog. :)

Thanks for the reply, Rebecca!

Yeah, by "sizes running small" I meant more that they tended to stock clothing in only smaller sizes. I would love to check out the store in person to see if they have a bigger variety of size options, but alas, I am located 1400 miles away!

I think I can give them the benefit of the doubt for being a new online store, but as I said before, I think the most effective way to make their color system work according to their philosophy is to stock a variety of sizes, and to seek out vendors that make cute clothing in bigger sizes as well as ones that make them in smaller sizes.

It's not just an issue with Be Yourself, it's a problem with the fashion industry as a whole. But I thought it would be productive to share my thoughts with someone who actually has direct communication with the company, which seems to want to provide options to women of all sizes and be a positive force in women's fashion.

On a more practical note, I don't think it'd be too hard to be able to sort clothes by size color on the website? That would definitely make it easier to see what my options are! (I guess I should state for the record that I'm a red or orange.)

Sorry for the long reply!
