The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is one of the most charming and unconventional stories ever made into a film. It all starts when a young widow (Gene Tierney) buys a seaside cottage that is rumored to be haunted. Before too long she realizes that the rumors are true, but instead of being scared off she confronts the ghost and the two form a unique bond. Captain Gregg (the ghost) comes to admire Mrs. Muir's spunk and even helps devise a way for her to earn a living and remain in the house. When success and a real man come courting, things start to get even more interesting...

Oh I have not seen this! It sound awesome! The place that I was renting from closed, and Blockbuster has a horrible selection of classic films. I have not tried netflicks, maybe I should? I miss out on so many good movies.
I absolutely love this movie. And my favorite detail - that oh so urbane cad (aka alive guy) is played by George Sanders, who was also the voice of Shere Khan the Tiger in the The Jungle Book. He's got the best voice ever.
One of my favorite movies to watch on grey, rainy days like this one (in Chicago, that is) - totally second that recommendation.

Ok, when I read this post, the movie fell into the "I'll probably watch it if I have the time and feel like it" category, but knowing that Shere Khan is in it makes it a must-see!
Now, I just have to acquire it... I wonder if it's at the library...

i'm going to track down this film. it's right up my alley. it has a very noir style and those costumes, esp. the hats, are so fabulous.

Oh I absolutely adore this movie!
If you love this ghost and human love story, then you will just LOVE "A Portrait of Jennie". It's a little more dark then this one, but none the less enjoyable
And I just simply adore this movie as well!
@Bianka, I do love Portrait of Jennie! It's definitely more mysterious and dark, but so good. That one really keeps you guessing.
I love this movie! For those looking for it, I remember streaming it somewhere on the internet last year. I don't remember where, but you could probably find it if you searched.

I used to watch this movie every time it was on AMC. It was always on rather late & I would always feel like such a rebel staying up late to watch it.
ooh, I loved the TV show too, from the 70's. As a child I thought of the Captain as the ideal man... gentlemanly and kind.
Love that movie--it strikes the right balance between realistic and fantastical. I need to watch it again.
I do not often check out movie recs but this one sounds too fun. I love the idea of ghosts and haunted houses in an amusing setting.
I hope I find a way to watch this!

Oh, bless you for blogging about this beautiful movie!!! It's been in my top twenty for most of my life. It's so rich, funny, and truly, deeply romantic in a way most films can't even touch anymore. *sigh* Gene Tierney was hauntingly lovely, and a great actress too--I third the recommendation for "Portrait of Jennie", and also would like to add, Gene was amazing in "Leave Her To Heaven" and "Laura"! :-)
I was randomly obsessed with this movie when I was 8! Oh how I love old Hollywood...
