Change Will Do You Good

A couple of people have commented that my outfits have been unexpected lately; each one is a bit of a surprise. I'm rather thrilled people noticed because I've been making a conscious effort to experiment a bit more. It's not that these looks are outside of my comfort zone, they're just outside of my usual zone. I, like anyone else, tend to fall into a certain style and routine until so many of my outfits tend to just blend together. So, I've been trying to avoid this rut by intentionally mixing things up.
This outfit takes several elements I don't wear on a regular basis: seperates, ruffles, and length. The seperates detail isn't very important here since it is a simple black-on-black pairing. The ruffles are a big step for me: they're so dramatic and voluminous. The length is my biggest departure from my routine. I'm 5'1" and I have a personal, probably silly theory of "the shorter the skirt, the taller I look." So skirts that hit at this awkard past-the-knee-mid-calf height are completely outside of my usual. However, since life isn't always about looking tall I'm wearing the skirt. Altogether the look is a change and change is good.
Oh, and I wore this skirt as a dress while in NYC; it's still a totally modest length on me worn that way.

i think you mixed black well here. the ruffles are great, and i don't think they look bad hitting past your knees!

Good for you for having the confidence to wear something different, and I think you look quite tall actually (not that looking short is a bad thing of course!). You look great whatever you wear, and your hair colour looks amazing next to the black dress!

yup, this look is definitely different for you, but I really love that you're experimenting with your style. I never find your style boring or in a rut, but whatever keeps you happy and fashionable is good with me! I think you pull off this dress remarkably well, I'm only 5'2" so I know the length on that dress would freak me out too, but you look great and glam in it

Thats one hell of a gorgeous skirt. I am going to get me one! You are looking more edgier for a change and I so approve!! :)

I agree change is good. not that I don't like your otehr outfits (I usually love them) but the skirt is fantastic! The length is so original and I love those ruffles. To me it is a great success!!

I love wearing skirts as dresses. This black ruffled skirt works great as both. I didn't know you were only 5'1", because you always looks taller because I've always thought that you have long legs! I think it's great that you're attempting to do something a bit different—makes life more 'spicy', ha ha. Your Triptych dress seemed very different for you, as well as the Ice Queen post dress. I have to say I'm curious what you will wear next.

This outfit looks really lovely on you. I love the ruffles...and I would have never guessed that you are only 5'1. You look about 5'7 in your pics. This is encouraging to me b/c I am only 5'2 and I have always felt stuck in the same rut about length, so now I am inspired to experiment as well.

i love your studded bag, it reminds me of something similar to what i've got

I'd actually venture a guess that the ruffles make you look taller! All in all, I really like this outfit and it's great to see someone actively experimenting to change up their look. I'm inspired now!

Change is always good, but it's tough. Kind of like that song by She and Him, "Change is Hard."

I'm opposite from you. I don't have a specific style; I've never defined it. So consequently, I don't necessarily have a usual style zone because I'm either wearing something different, or wearing something awful and boring. But all my outfits together don't necessarily give me a specific, defined look. I wish they did.

You have been very unexpected lately, but it's been refreshing and fun to watch transformations.

I never think you're 5'1 in your posts! You always look taller than that, so hey, your little rules for looking taller are working!

Love that skirt....so cute with the shoes!

Gorgeous dress. Black looks amazing against your skintone. Love that bag too!SarahD:)

I *love* this look. The ruffles are so girly and romantic but the black color and tough bag keep it from being overly sweet. This entirely black outfit is amazing with your hair color!

You make classic look fresh, and fresh classic. LOVE this look, love it on you. "Big girl shoes" aka heels keeps the length of the skirt from overpowering your tiny frame. And somehow you manage to rock all black without looking cliche. Bravo!

Casey said...

I love the skirt length on you! It is very different, but sometimes playing with variations on your usual look is a fantastic way to stretch yourself stylistically. Bravo for doing something a bit unusual! ;)

You're right about the shorter the skirt the taller you'll look but this dress also has a high taille so it will look as if you have legs up to your chin ;)
And being small is cute anyway!

THE WANDERLUSTERS said...

I'm totally the same way about length. I refuse to wear anything that hits past the knees but you've pulled it off so well! I just might have to try myself soon :)

Love the details in this outfit. It doesn`t make you shorter- it makes you thiner :)
And I like the fact that you want to get out from your normal zone :D Life is about experimenting things , especially in fashion :)

Good luck with that hun!

This is really super cute. I admire the risk taking. I'm 5 foot 0 and do not dare experiment with length as I too hold onto the same theory that the shorter the skirt the taller I must look. Thanks though, this is great inspiration, definitely is making me consider stepping out of my comfort zone.

I don't know - I think it makes you look tall in a way - maybe its the ruffles but the skirt itself looks quite long - making your legs look long!

You're right, this is a change! But no so much that you look out of your comfort zone, on the contrary, the long look really suits you! Have you dared to try a maxi dress/skirt?

You look amazing - really. I love the odd length - I also tend to wear short above-the-knee skirts and did try a mid calf dress the other day and was surprised with how good it looked. you look lovely :) xx

I'm in a very similar place with my outfits. I've been trying to mix it up so I don't get bored!

PS: odd but in these photos I think this length of dress makes you seem taller!

I agree, sometimes it's not always about trying to look a certain way. Sometimes it's just about wearing what you like! That said, I think you look great in the skirt.

You look gorgeous! I think the volume and the drama really amp up the look and I don't think you look short at all!

I love this -- very grown-up and dramatic.

The length is what I love about it most! They're totally understated--skirts that hit past the knees. The ruffles give it some flair, too.

Change is always good, I love the outfits you post lately! Makes me want to shake up what I wear

Heather Lynn said...

ah I know what you mean when they hit past your knee, like mid calf length. I'm 4'11 so anything past my knees makes me feel like I'm being swallowed by fabric. I love the ruffles though. Very fun =)

i love this blog! And you are so pretty and beautiful. Keep up the good work!

I love the long skirt on you! I agree with the other commenters that say it makes you look taller, going with a snug top was the way to go :)

I think it's cool you're trying to mix it up. It's amazing how quickly you can fall into a rut. Even an ok rut :)

i'm in the boat with everyone else who thinks you look taller. you really look TALLER in this outfit!

i really prefer longer length dresses (around knee length or just above). i think this dress looks really really good on you. i don't think that mid-calf length looks awkward at all. in fact, it's really lovely, as it hits at such an attractive spot on your calf. i think it's subtle and sexy, especially as you're showing quite a bit of shoulders and arms on top. i love the thoreau poem and the china girl fashion story above too.
