Baby I'm A Star

the clothes horse, sheer dress, star print dress, family affairs dress, black tights, clog heels, vintage hat, vintage, retro, black and white, baby I'm a star
I'm a sucker for star prints; I think it is because they seem less cloying and feminine than florals or heart prints. Which is not to say I don't occasionally give in to the appeal of a flower print, it just means in the hierarchy of my heart: the star print reigns supreme. All this made the Baby I'm A Star dress from Family Affairs too perfect to pass up. This dress is part of my "less is more" move towards buying higher quality, special pieces. I'm still not going to be stocking my wardrobe with Chloe and Miu Miu anytime soon, but I think I can afford to buy one independent designer item every so often...especially if I wait for the sales!

Great dress! Great photo shoot too. This kind of reminds me of a modern day version Wyeth's Christina's World (minus the creepy house in the background and pink dress). Great photos :)

I hear what you're saying about investing in more quality pieces. (I feel I've reached that point in my life as well!) I would've guessed this to fall into that category, based on the lovely details like buttons on the sleeves and the back, puffed sleeves, etc.

Beautiful!

Wow! Did you see that this dress is 40% off right now? Oh, happy day!

mmmmkay, so I don't know whether I should hug you or kick you for introducing me to Family Affairs. LIKE I even need that plaid jumpsuit from last Spring, but like I don't.

I love things that button up at the back in theory, but they're soooo annoying after a while :(
It looks gorgeous though

That dress is too cute. I love the collar and how it fastens at the back. Also, I am really enjoying your gifs. I have been playing around with GIMP for awhile so I think, when I have the time, I am going to try and make one myself!

It looks especially lovely with the white slip (it comes with black right?). I love how you can wear these super appealing prints (also thinking of the Ice Cream dress from ModCloth) without seeming kitschy. In fact, making them classy! I haven't been able to find that balance yet myself and so I struggle to find equilibrium between my love of horse prints and hello kitty and my soft-sighing adoration of lady-like delicacy and savoir faire.

I absolutly adore this post! It persuaded me to get my starry dress out of my wardrobe and wear it. Thankyou. I have written about it on my blog- http://fashionteapot.blogspot.com/2010/04/everyone-is-star.html

Gorgeous dress!
I like your "less is more" philosophy. Sample sales of local independent designers are my new strategy to score beautiful pieces for half of the price. Vancouver seems to have a lot going on all the time!

I love the material that the dress is made out of, very flowy! I'm not big on star prints myself, but rather big abstract ones.

Lovely outfit. :)

Very cute. I tend to go for more low quality stuff i realize but I do enjoy splurging every once in a while.

Less is more is definitely a mantra worth having! I'd love to see some of your pieces show up in various outfits like they did on your blog in remixes, or when you were away in Greece and such. It's nice to see the many different things you can do with one item.

I don't think I can pull off wearing stars; although, they are my favorite shape! I agree that flowers seem more feminine, but they can seem more mature than stars. I already look like a kid, so I guess that's why I've unconsciously avoided them! lol. The dress looks great on you, though!

I love this dress.
For a moment, i thought its a sleeveless dress but as i scrolled down to look at the other pictures, and realised tt its a long sleeve dress, whats more with padded shoulders, I immediately fell in love with it.

I too have been obsessing over star prints lately, just this past week I bought two star printed blouses while thrifting. This dress is fabulous, I love all of the attention to detail with the buttons and tiny puff sleeve.

I know what you mean. Stocking one or two designer pieces occasionally isn't so bad--ESPECIALLY on sale prices!

And this dress is too adorable. You're right the stars, while still being feminine, are not outrightly so like florals or hearts.

The dress represents you truly. Just the perfect blend of whimsy and sophistication.

i think i'd love star prints more if they didnt remind me so much of high school -- our mascot was the stars!

Hm, fun fact that you like stars more than florals! What a sweet name the dress has as well. The stars kinda/sorta remind me of a post I did about Starry Night:

I love the star print. I like the nice sharp lines of the stars. They add a crispness to the flowy dress.

Auuugggghhhh gorgeous! And it fits you so well too! Agreed on the star prints, stars are cute but not so in-your-face girly as florals and hearts

Your dress is adorable, and I love all the buttons! I'm also considering the "less is more" approach, but it's extremely difficult to cut back when you make visits to H&M and Forever 21. Hope this plan works for you!

Also - great hat!!

This dress looks perfect on you, you know.

The title reminds me of a song of mine by my favourite pop band from Japan, The Brilliant Green (which I know you can probably appreciate): "Baby I'm Gonna Be a Star" from the song "Moldy Hole!" (Link: http://www.lyricstime.com/the-brilliant-green-moldy-hole-lyrics.html)

I love everything about this entire ensemble. It's a wonderfully cut dress, with a great print.

You're such a dressing inspiration. If only I had enough money to expand my wardrobe. I hate being poor and petite.

That dress looks wonderful on you!
I'm really picky about star prints (in fear of looking like a scene kid). It has to be a grown-up and/or classic star pattern. The chiffon and sharp collar balance out the fun print!

jukeboxsunshine said...

I really love your outfit. It looks fantastic on you! i really like the style of the dress and the stars look so cute

It's perfection! I definitely second your opinion on the star print - girly, without being too saccharine, and quirky without being too juvenile. And the length is ideal. As a fellow shorter girl, I appreciate the higher hemline that modern dresses more often have. Do the vintage pieces you find usually have a satisfactory length? The ones I acquire are so often a terribly awkward mid-calf length. Oh, the woes of being "pocket-sized"...

star print. long sleeves, drop waist, peter pan collar, buttons up the back and sleeves. You may have just snagged my dream dress! I'd be more offended if it didn't look so cute on you.
