I've had this dress for ages and it is one of my favorite thrift store finds. I like to pin it into a mini, but I'm not committing to actually chopping the extra inches off because perhaps one day I'll want a more elegant length, you know? For as long as I have owned this dress and the minor customizations I put it through, I've only worn it a handful of times because I always felt that velvet might be too much for day wear. Recently though, I decided I liked it too much to allow it to gather dust in the dark regions of my closet. This is a reoccurring theme for me, but pieces you really like should be worn to death, not saved for some mythic occasion (that for me rarely occurs). If I didn't wear my dresses to run errands and walk the dog, I would never wear dresses!

Totally agree. It's fun to get dressed up to go to ... the grocery store. I say, why not! Not to mention that dresses are soooo comfy!
Beautiful pictures! Love your headpiece.
lovely dress! i'm amazed that you wear velvet with such ease and elegance... i completely understand what you mean about wearing dresses to do casual tasks - it really forces you to branch out :)

Gorgeous pics...love the headpiece!
xx
I love your pictures! I really do love those tights, too!
Excellent point. The same goes for nice jewelery and china... why keep it for a special occassion that may never come? The president will not come to your house (most likely) so putting delivery pizza on your nice plates is perfectly acceptable. I love this dress and how you styled it.
You look just like Peaches Geldolf! (Which is good. Peahces is the best of the Geldofs)
And the shoes are awsome, love the studs.

I get more and more jealous of your Cynthia Rowley tights every time you post pictures in them!

It's the same for me. People always ask me why I'm so dressed up for the mall or work or running errands on the weekends... well, if I don't dress up then, I will never get to wear my pretty little things! (:
This is another amazing set of photos, doll. That dress is lovely and so are the flowers. LOVE!
The headband adds the perfect touch and makes the velvet seem 70s awesome!
Love.
It is a pretty dress, I love velvet :) I really like your headband to, very pretty!
My finger is hesitating over the "buy it now" button for those CR tights. I LOVE them.

Lovely pictures! I'm not a big fan of velvet myself, but I like how you style it!
I love the tights too!
i have bought soooo many velvet dresses from thrift stores, they are so easy to just throw on with anything and really comfortable. good idea to pin it too - i think this one would look pretty classy long.
Soooooo pretty!!! I love these photos! That dress and those tights are just awesome! :)
I love the headband.
i totally love these pictures, mostly the first and last one!
Love these pictures, your totally right pieces you love should be worn more and not saved for special occasions.. with ugg boots and leggings being so popular people seem to be getting more and more casual everyday..I still love my dresses :)

what beautiful pictures! I love the velvet...I own 3 velvet dresses myself. But that headpiece is the focal point for me. Absolutely stunning. You could be in a movie from the 1930s with it.
I'm so jealous of those blossoming trees. What a magical place.
gorgeous pictures! i especially love the headpiece you are just gorgeous!! :D xx
so pretty, and yes, outfits you love should be worn! not left waiting in the closet..
Love headpiece, oh so pretty!
spring BLOSSOMMMMSS! I love these photossss ;) xo, Kim www.crowded-closet.com
Oh, I make the same "mistake". Dressing up everyday or only weekends?

I want your ring!!
& thanks for that tip, I usually "save" my favorite clothes for "mythic occasions," but you're SO right...I should just wear them! :D
Your photos are always lovely, but I think these are exceptional. Really stunning. I love the contrast of the light flowers with your dark outfit.
pretty pictures
also i am in love with your headband
and your outfits are always lovely :)

couldn't agree more! I was just thinking about that regarding a dress I love, but never wear. It's funny how our minds make up these places and events in which clothes should be worn.
great post and great outfit!

gorgeous dress.
breathtaking (:
i have horrible memories of being forced into dresses as a little kid to the grocery store...
though i did remix my black velvet skirt into a top and then layered a button up and cardigan over it.
ur rings are amazing! love these photos! :))

very beautiful!
you remind me of an elf! ^^

Beautiful. And I especially love the headpiece in this shoot. I only wear headbands in the summer so I'm pretty impatient for the days to get warmer.
I totally agree! Love this post!
You look gorgeous, so adorable!

I like the dress but I love love love those tights. I have a weakness for cute, subtle tights and hosiery.
So perfect. I think as of late velvet has become more and more of a day wear fabric as opposed to how it was once viewed. Love the flower crown as well =)
what a beautiful vintage find! and i also love the headpiece and shoes....
you look lovely!

more black! I love it :) I have a few dresses that are longer than I want them to be but I'm the same way so I haven't cut them up either. I pin them, etc. I'm a big fan of velvet but you're right, it can be hard to wear for daytime.
Anyway, beautiful outfit!
You look so lovely in these pictures, the floral headband says "elven princess" to me. :D And I completely agree with your philosophy about clothes: it's nice to save away clothes for a special time, but they're no good if they're left to be unloved and not used for their purpose-- to be worn!
Toast with Charmalade
simply stunning outfit!

Wow what a fantastic velvet dress! I would not be able to hem it up if I were you either! Haha where else is there to wear a velvet dress if not to walk your dog? I love your flower headband and your tights too!
So elegant--- that dress makes a great mini and that headband makes you look like some type of beautiful, ancient woodland creature! Very romantic look and certainly appropriate for any occasion, agreed there is no need to wait for the perfect one!
I definetely wouldnt say you look over dressed. I think the dress suits you.
Love the photos as usual.
the dress is pretty, it's nice to have something that is versatile, you never know when you will need it a little longer
Hey Rebecca, love this whole look. Just perfect for us as we are coming into winter.
We loved it so much we even featured you on our site here: http://www.dropdeadgorgeousdaily.com/2010/03/blogger-crush-more-than-just-a-clothes-horse/
Although sadly we couldn't find those stunning Miss Sixty mules anywhere! xo
Your outfit could not be cuter! I love the headband.
Great outfit! I love the spotty tights with the dress - you've given me some inspiration here!
i dont think you look to formal for day time! i like this look a lot - especially the tights and the fun blue nail polish!
oh i absolutely love your headband! and velvet for day is utterly appropriate - we should dress up as much as we can!
Velvet is hard to pull off and you do it perfect, it's also coming back, great look !
luv the blog!
xoxo
The dress looks equally great for day! Despite it being made from velvet, I think the casual cut tones it down a little.
Also, your headpiece is neat, very Grecian.
i love your pictures! i think my fav is the 2nd to last one. :) and lovely headpiece!
ps. i love the gif with nasha and the vintage satchel. :)
I think the cut of the dress makes it wearable during the day, even if it is velvet.
I seriously covet that hedgehog ring.
I totally agree.
And this dress is sooo pretty! Love it.
Such gorgeous pictures, Rebecca.
I love that philosophy! I have far too many things that collect dust when they should be out & about.
And it's so lovely to see someone dressed in an unusual way to do ordinary things - inspiring & fun, like suddenly discovering you've walked into someone's interesting movie. :)
I absolutely love this outfit--especially the headpiece. Now I have an urge to go hunt for the perfect velvet dress :)

Oh, it looks like spring is in full bloom over there. Love the headpiece.
I adore this look, and may even say it is one of my favorites from you! I love the short length of your velvet dress, the beautiful pattern in your tights, and your headpiece! Gorgeous photos too!
Your photos are always gorgeous, and I'm especially enamored with these! So pretty.
I love your potography and your fashion sense. You are an inspiration!!!
I love the headpiece! It has a really cool 1920s spin on Grecian style vibe that I love.
the renegade bean
Agree with you!
I dressed-up for walking my dogs and people find it is okay to do so. Plus, even it's velvet, but there's nothing too much on it, your dress is simply gorgeous. And I love the way you pull off everything together, the headpiece, the tights, the shoes, and the background.
Rad :)
You look lovely! Are those peach blossoms?
Very cute! I like the buttons in the front. I've been considering buying a crushed velvet dress, and I would definitely be wearing that in the daytime. I say go for it!
Lovely photos, as always.

I actually prefer dressing up to do everyday things than to actually go out. There's no pressure and you can experiment.
Fab and very on-trend. Velvet was really big in the Autumn/Winter shows at London Fashion Week last month! x
wow, you've got a total gorgeous style :)
and you're a redhead :D
i wish i can have a hair color just like yours.
How lovely!! I adore that headband.

also I agree about dressing up for daily tasks and I do the same not because I have to, but because my life is anti-glamorous for the most part and waiting for those mythical perfect event for that perfect dress... you said it better.
I always have that problem that I save clothes for "mythic occasions" and then they never come....
very pretty tights. I like that theres a different pattern on the front and back
I understand where you're coming from, velvet does seemm like a more dressy fabric...
