An Occasion To Dress For

the clothes horse, fashion, style, black velvet, vintage, retro, mini dress, black dress, wednesday addams, headpiece, dame, polka dot tights, sheer stockings, heeled clogs, daily outfit, spring, cherry blossom
I've had this dress for ages and it is one of my favorite thrift store finds. I like to pin it into a mini, but I'm not committing to actually chopping the extra inches off because perhaps one day I'll want a more elegant length, you know? For as long as I have owned this dress and the minor customizations I put it through, I've only worn it a handful of times because I always felt that velvet might be too much for day wear. Recently though, I decided I liked it too much to allow it to gather dust in the dark regions of my closet. This is a reoccurring theme for me, but pieces you really like should be worn to death, not saved for some mythic occasion (that for me rarely occurs). If I didn't wear my dresses to run errands and walk the dog, I would never wear dresses!

Totally agree. It's fun to get dressed up to go to ... the grocery store. I say, why not! Not to mention that dresses are soooo comfy!

Beautiful pictures! Love your headpiece.

lovely dress! i'm amazed that you wear velvet with such ease and elegance... i completely understand what you mean about wearing dresses to do casual tasks - it really forces you to branch out :)

I love your pictures! I really do love those tights, too!

Excellent point. The same goes for nice jewelery and china... why keep it for a special occassion that may never come? The president will not come to your house (most likely) so putting delivery pizza on your nice plates is perfectly acceptable. I love this dress and how you styled it.

You look just like Peaches Geldolf! (Which is good. Peahces is the best of the Geldofs)

And the shoes are awsome, love the studs.

It's the same for me. People always ask me why I'm so dressed up for the mall or work or running errands on the weekends... well, if I don't dress up then, I will never get to wear my pretty little things! (:

This is another amazing set of photos, doll. That dress is lovely and so are the flowers. LOVE!

The headband adds the perfect touch and makes the velvet seem 70s awesome!

Lovely pictures! I'm not a big fan of velvet myself, but I like how you style it!
I love the tights too!

i have bought soooo many velvet dresses from thrift stores, they are so easy to just throw on with anything and really comfortable. good idea to pin it too - i think this one would look pretty classy long.

what beautiful pictures! I love the velvet...I own 3 velvet dresses myself. But that headpiece is the focal point for me. Absolutely stunning. You could be in a movie from the 1930s with it.

I'm so jealous of those blossoming trees. What a magical place.

couldn't agree more! I was just thinking about that regarding a dress I love, but never wear. It's funny how our minds make up these places and events in which clothes should be worn.

i have horrible memories of being forced into dresses as a little kid to the grocery store...

I like the dress but I love love love those tights. I have a weakness for cute, subtle tights and hosiery.

So perfect. I think as of late velvet has become more and more of a day wear fabric as opposed to how it was once viewed. Love the flower crown as well =)

more black! I love it :) I have a few dresses that are longer than I want them to be but I'm the same way so I haven't cut them up either. I pin them, etc. I'm a big fan of velvet but you're right, it can be hard to wear for daytime.

Anyway, beautiful outfit!

Charmalade said...

You look so lovely in these pictures, the floral headband says "elven princess" to me. :D And I completely agree with your philosophy about clothes: it's nice to save away clothes for a special time, but they're no good if they're left to be unloved and not used for their purpose-- to be worn!

Wow what a fantastic velvet dress! I would not be able to hem it up if I were you either! Haha where else is there to wear a velvet dress if not to walk your dog? I love your flower headband and your tights too!

So elegant--- that dress makes a great mini and that headband makes you look like some type of beautiful, ancient woodland creature! Very romantic look and certainly appropriate for any occasion, agreed there is no need to wait for the perfect one!

i dont think you look to formal for day time! i like this look a lot - especially the tights and the fun blue nail polish!

oh i absolutely love your headband! and velvet for day is utterly appropriate - we should dress up as much as we can!

Velvet is hard to pull off and you do it perfect, it's also coming back, great look !

luv the blog!

The dress looks equally great for day! Despite it being made from velvet, I think the casual cut tones it down a little.

Also, your headpiece is neat, very Grecian.

i love your pictures! i think my fav is the 2nd to last one. :) and lovely headpiece!

ps. i love the gif with nasha and the vintage satchel. :)

I think the cut of the dress makes it wearable during the day, even if it is velvet.

I seriously covet that hedgehog ring.

I love that philosophy! I have far too many things that collect dust when they should be out & about.
And it's so lovely to see someone dressed in an unusual way to do ordinary things - inspiring & fun, like suddenly discovering you've walked into someone's interesting movie. :)

Agree with you!
I dressed-up for walking my dogs and people find it is okay to do so. Plus, even it's velvet, but there's nothing too much on it, your dress is simply gorgeous. And I love the way you pull off everything together, the headpiece, the tights, the shoes, and the background.

Very cute! I like the buttons in the front. I've been considering buying a crushed velvet dress, and I would definitely be wearing that in the daytime. I say go for it!
