The Wild Still Lingered In Him

I can never view enough of Rodney Smith's photographs. There seems to be some intriguing narrative in many of his images, like he is as much as story-teller as a photographer. Or perhaps he is merely capturing subjects on the onset of some grand adventure from whence they will never return...

Freaky stuff, I'm pretty sure I've had a nightmare with something looked that boathouse thing. Weird.

Rodney Smith is quite wonderful. He is part of the older generation of photographers--and one of the last who has a completely different concept of photography than my/our generation. It's not about post-editing, tons of fancy look-what-I-can-do Photoshop work, but the integrity of the black and white print executed in a delicate, often humorous way that is completely supported by the subject matter. I should be writing a post on him haha.

These photographs are eerie in the best possible way; it's not the type of eerie that you think is vengeful, but the slight twinge of fear lies in the unknown.

I especially love the first one.

I love Rodney Smith's work. I don't know very much about photography or the work/style of individual photographers, but I've had Rodney Smith's name and images engraved on my mind since high school.

The quote you chose fits perfectly with the mood of the photos you selected for this post.

Oh, wow, I can't believe I've never heard of him - these are amazing. I'll have to check him out.

Got a bit lost in these, actually. The last one really tells a story. Intriguing lovestories, of sorts.

I've only seen Rodney Smith's more refined work, which is so very witty and playful and sophisticated--but I think I like these better. The girl in the lilypads is just stunning.

WOW. Really, really stunning! If I was ever in charge of an advertising dept of a clothing brand, I would hire him as photographer for the ads.

You should check out Robert ParkeHarrison's work. He had an exhibit at the Figge art museum a few years ago, and his stuff was similar to this.

I love the utter epicness of these photos. There's something so isolated and solitary about the figures within them, yet they seem bursting at the seams with stories and legends to spin.

I love that he has a fascination with water and trees. There's something about nature that draws me into these photos.

And of course, I can definitely see how they entrance you! They are definitely up your alley.

Oddly enough, my most recent post is about fog.

I love Rodney Smith as well. The touch of surreal is fantastic. Interestingly enough, I had a TA who interned under Rodney Smith and said that he claimed that the photographs had no meaning behind them, that it's just an image. It's always made me wonder.

I enjoyed all the photos, thanks for posting them. That first one effects me the most, though. It's got a real sense of movement. Pushing forward into the fog.

These are absolutely stunning. The third one down looks a lot like some of the swamp areas here in South Carolina. Such an air of mystery.

I lovvvve Rodney Smith. His images are so unbeleivably perfect. His book looks so epic but at 700 dollars is currently not affordable (how can they even make a $700 dollar book!?!)

These are the sort of photos that just make me dash to grab a pen and some paper so i can write, write, write.

You had such perfect timing with this post - it's been raining all day, so it's the most wonderful day to see such pictures and be sitting inside drinking tea and writing.
