She Dances In A Photograph

I feel a bit "dance" inspired in this outfit; like a ballerina off-duty? It is probably the shoes, which are a real chore to put on!
Ah, these shoes: I bought them on a sale at a Zara in Germany. A friend and I hopped over there in December one long weekend during our semester in Greece, for the Christmas markets. Neither of us were quite expecting how cold it was in Germany compared to Athens and we ended up freezing most of the time. Our solution was to seek shelter in various stores while we explored new cities. You know, visit a breezy castle then hunt down some shop with central heat to recover inside; admire a cathedral, stop for a hot bite to eat, etc. Thus, we stumbled into Zara one crisp evening with red noses and purple toes and I discovered these shoes. They were on sale and my friend was very enthusiastic as to my need for them. Yes, I travel with enablers. Unfortunately, the number of times I have worn them since then can be counted on one hand. Which isn't to say I regret purchasing them; after all the worth of some items lies in the memories they hold.
If you see a recurring theme about memories on my blog and my dependence upon objects and pictures to keep them alive, it might be because this is a minor obsession of mine. I don't really depend upon my head being able to maintain accurate recollection of the past; frankly I distrust my mental ability to remember. With tokens and images frozen in time I do hope to delay my imminent amnesia...

I see how everything comes together to look ballerina-ish. And that sweater is awesome! The two colors of sweaters on one sweater... Is that even possible??? I guess so!

I'm really enjoying those little animated pictures that you've been posting that shows the wind blowing around (esp. that one of you laying in the grass from a few days ago!). I notice this sometimes when flipping through my photos, it's funny to catch the wind by accident like that.

Aahh, that gorgeous carigan again! And I'm in love with this pretty dress.

I could do with shoes like this for summer, they look great for frolicking in.

Your shoes are magical and your gifs always inspire me.

"after all the worth of some items lies in the memories they hold." I so agree with with this sentiment. Some items just mean to much to me to ever giveaway, even if I rarely wear them.

I know just what you mean about dependence on objects to remember the things that have happened. It stresses me out sometimes when I think about the effort it will take me to move in a few months and where I will put all of these objects--and not just clothes and shoes but little gifts and cards that really should have gone to the trash ages ago! But it makes me so happy to be able to point to something and remember the story behind it. The story behind the shoes (not to mention how cute the shoes are!!) seem so sweet and worth keeping forever :)

I love those shoes! They remind me of the beribboned slippers Aerin wears in Robin McKinley's book The Hero and the Crown.

Your pendant and ring are also beautiful. Serious lust after so many of your cocktail rings!

Maeko said...

You really do look like an off duty ballerina, or an off-duty arty school teacher. I love the gif of the wind rustling your skirts. It's brilliant.

I hear you about placing sentimental value in physical things for the memories they hold and are associated with them. Some of my most cherished objects are pieces of clothing that were worn when the most important times of my life were made...

Girl from the North Country said...

I have a very similar pair of shoes I got in Greece while I was there for business. Like you I never really wear them as they are a pain to put on and not very warm in winter months. I have a bunch of things like that I get while on business trips and they just seem to live on my shelf.

The hair helps add to the ballerina vibe :) This outfit is so fun.. I love your take on it. I would have never paired the cardigan with the dress, but the whole outfit together is really unique and simple/ elegant.

redheaded guru said...

beautiful pictures! love them! and i went to germany a few summers ago and was also surprised by the coolness, even in the summer! perfect excuse to hit up h&m for a scarf! haha. i had never heard of zara before, but thought it was a very cool store!

lisa said...

I'm the same way with clothes and accessories I buy abroad. Sometimes I forget about the particular memories associated with a certain piece until someone asks where I got it, and as soon as I say the city (Mexico City/New York/London) memories come flooding back.

Marmelindela said...

I love clothes with a story...

Your cardigan is amazing as is the rest of your outfit. Just so lovely.

Mel said...

Those shoes are amazing! Is it weird that I actually remember when you bought them? I guess that's another wonderful thing about blogs: you can go back and look upon previous events and memories even if you can't remember everything. I have shoes like your green ones and they totally make me feel like a ballerina too! I love how you paired it with your cardigan, and your dress is so beautiful!

Eli said...

I like this look without bangs, especially with the shoes, you look like a woodsy ballerina!

Pretty with the bangs pulled bang. And your dress is absolutely lovely.

Delightfully Tacky said...

Bangs pulled back as well! For all the years I had no bangs, I can't seem to pull them back nowadays!

This outfit is so whimsical, kind of "Alice in Wonderland."

Jen said...

The shoes? Definitely worth it, even for only a handful of wears.

I do the same - my flat is filled with memories that I can't bear to throw away. In fact, our entire spare bedroom is just a room full of mementos, souvenirs and memories. And no bed! :)

I love the story behind your shoes, and I can definitely relate to it. Bought some amazing shoes in Germany myself this summer, haven't worn them that many times - but I remember what I wore and what I did those days. That said; you dress is adorable. Great how you paired it with that cardigan :)
