Climber Of Trees, Swinger Of Birches

"So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be.
It's when I'm weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood..." -Robert Frost
I tend to avoid talking about the process of taking my pictures, because the tripod, self-timer, and difficulty involved, tends to take the romanticism out of the final product. However, I have to say: this set has been one of the most difficult and most rewarding so far. I literally had to climb this tree in ten seconds and more than a dozen times. Needless to say, there were many images of me awkwardly mid-climb with my butt up in the air...

Outfit details:
Urban Outfitters jacket
dress, bag, and necklace courtesy of Modcloth
tights, gift
Bloch wedges via Giltfuse

i was wondering how you took pictures!

that dress is very cute, softly elegant. perfect for climbing trees, romping around the forest.

Karin said...

Well, it was worth it. Those are some gorgeous pictures and that's a lovely outfit. Very romantic.

Indy said...

Ah, the joys of self timer! At least for the zillion bad pictures there are a couple that you can actually use!

That tree is so unique!

Julia said...

I can relate to your angst, but I have to say the final product is truly lovely. The green mossy tree makes your hair stand out as a very beautiful color.

anne said...

hehehe! oh the joys of the self- timer! well, needless to say, they turned out beautiful :D the moss and the fern growing on the tree are gorgeous.

totally worth it - it does sound difficult though!

I wouldn't have the patience for that! But the result was totally worth it, the images are beautiful and romantic. It must be the light bt your hair looks even more red than usual, its gorgeous!

These really are wondeful photos, and I love that dress. I understand what you mean,I've often tried to climb trees ect in 10 seconds to get a good photo.I didn't use to have a tripod,so I had many problems with balancing my camera too!

HAHA I can just imagine you trying to scramble up a tree before the timer is finished! I would have snagged my tights all over the place and there would be lots of photos of me looking all madfaced.

They turned out beautiful, of course! <3

Francine said...

You've got to get yourself a remote! Even if you don't want to have it in your hand in the photos, some cameras have a 2 second remote setting so that the shutter doesn't go off until two seconds after you push the button on the remote, giving you some time to hide it in a pocket or something.

you do great things with that dress! so many fun looks :)

my fave is that horsey watch necklace, how lovely!

gorgeous dress and bag! and i know what you mean, i need to take at least 50 hideous pictures to get 5 semi-decent ones... ah, blogging is an inelegant task indeed!

Ah, it's good to know that even you Rebecca have self timer issues and out takes! :)

I love that necklace so much!

Diana said...

These photos are beautiful, and they are certainly worth the effort. Do you shoot with an SLR? If you do, you should get a wireless remote. I do that with my outfit shots now, and it makes things so much easier.

Sabrina said...

I love that Frost poem!!!! I want to own everything you are wearing in your photos, including the photos!!! they are great and you look AMAZING in them.

Megan V said...

You should definitely get a remote!! It will allow you to be much more comfortable and creative because you won't have to deal with all the running and messed up shots! They're so inexpensive, it's totally worth it. I just got one and LOVEEEEE it.

Line said...

your effort paid off. these pictures are fantastic. the colors and your outfit... j'adore.

goldenmeans said...

:) I'm glad you mentioned your process because after all your countless effortless-seeming ethereal and romantic shots, it lets us know that you are after all human. I can only imagine the pain of shimmying up that tree in time though! The end result is indeed stunning btw.

i love the ring, too. old gold's pear ring is now on my to-get list

Haha, I loved the description of you trying to climb a tree in less than ten seconds. You look so relaxed in the photo, picturing you scrambling up there is too too funny.

Also ugh, I am so gilt/giltfuse obsessed! Today they were having a moleskine sell and I bought one of those 12-month planner sets and some tights and socks... for less than the price of buying the planners alone (plus free shipping!). I am a total fangirl.

What a lovely tree and forest, and I love your dress! Maybe you should invest in a remote to take your pictures! Then you can climb all the way to the top and take the picture from there.

Since I've started working with the self-timer I realize how terribly difficult it is. These pictures are beautiful.

Eyeliah said...

Yes, it is funny to think of you setting up the camera, running over the tree, trying to sit gracefully while not ruining your lovely outfit. But you are right that it is so worth it. I imagine you have to take many pictures, though using a delay (which I am sure you do) will cut out some of those. :L)

I only very recently (read: this week) started photographing my outfits for posterity. And even in the small, controlable confines of my apartment it's still a challenge, fun but occasionally frustrating. I can only imagine what it was like trying to scramble up a tree!

However, once again, you've inspired me. I might just have to go exploring outside soon...

It does take a lot of practice that I have never learned to perfect. I don't even know how you manage to walk around with a tripod without feeling awkward, and yet you make your (as you said) romantic magic happen.

It really is magic, the way you photograph. Everything looks so perfectly story-boarded, it makes me envious. I do the best I can in the house I have, because tis much too cold to go outside, and there's the added bit that I have never surmounted the awkwardness and embarrassment that comes with taking photos in an urban environment for the sake of a blog... I have never gotten over the the idea of risking it, so I doubt I will ever get the bravery... I am much too old now, I suppose (I know I look young. I'm not. I'll be 28 in a few months.)

Anyway, you still make the magic happen, and I'm grateful for it. You're my little fashion faerie, enchanting my eyes from your mystical woods and meadows, in faraway, magical, happy lands.

Thanks, R.

You should get a remote (has someone already suggested this? There are too many comments to read them all just at this moment).
I used to do the same thing, then got myself a remote and, hey presto, photo time is much less time consuming/exhausting/error filled!

Holy smokes, I cannot believe you manage to get such amazing shots using a self timer! If your camera isn't compatible with a wireless remote, you might see if it has a setting on the self timer where it'll shoot several frames in succession -- at least that way you'll several tries for every time you have to hit the button and make a run for it!
