Tuesday Escapism

I'm really drawn to photographers and editorials that offer a sense of escapism. Whether it be the perfected elegance of Rodney Smith, or the imaginative offerings of Tim Walker, both capture a view of the world that is unreal. Lately, with a desire for brighter skies and warm, golden sand, the photographs of Wendy Bevan are captivating me.
This particular set is full of washed out tones and soothing blues; she shoots a lot on Polaroid and prefers natural lighting. There's a narrative quality to her pictures as well, as if these could be the stills from a Godard film. All in all, it's making me long to run away to the beach in faded basics and nautical stripes...
"To me, style is just the outside of content, and the content the inside of style, like the outside and the inside of the human body. Both go together, they can't be separated." -Jean Luc Godard

very strange! I meant to do a post on Wendy Bevan yesterday but didn't want to rush it because I love her work so much - I posted Zooey instead!

I totally agree about photos as escapism - I feel the same way about music and film. I'm sure that's why you (and I) are so attracted to reading too. same idea of escape.

Those are truly special! They almost look like some pictures your dad might have taken of your mother in the 70's on their honeymoon.

I love these -- I appreciate beach photos that feel more personal and not like an ad for a vacation getaway. This feels like a moment truly captured and treasured.

Sigh, I feel so good after looking at Wendy Bevan's photos. You have a knack for describing a photographer's work perfectly. For some reason, I can never truly articulate why I like a body of work.

Bevan's photos do have a slight similarity to David Hamilton's...perhaps it's the washed out colors and the overall quiet tone.

i am LOVINGGG all the stripes! for some reason I always associate stripes with the beach, perhaps its because of those old school striped bathing suits. hahah.
