Looking Back You Shouldn't Have Fought It

Nostalgia for last year and Greece was sparked by these boots which were bought there and haven't seen the light of day in awhile. The ability of clothes to carry so many memories is one of the things that makes me so attached to my wardrobe. When traveling I'm much more keen on purchasing clothes or jewelry in order to commemorate the trip rather than a nick-knack or traditional souvenir. Moving a lot means most superfluous things end up in boxes (that haven't been touched in years), but clothes always get unpacked and worn. Thus, whenever I don a certain item or throw on a particular pendant I awaken memories of interesting places and fun people.
These boots might not seem scream "Greek," but when wearing them I suddenly get swept back to the marbled streets of Athens. A loyal friend endured several days of hunting for boots with me; we visited shop after shop in search of the elusive ideal pair. When I tried these on and the shop helper winked at me to indicate approval, I knew I had found mine. Though we were less successful in my friend's hunt and dozens of stores later she still walked away empty-handed it is a positive memory for both us. Time spent in good company and humor, shopping until our feet hurt, but still pausing to appreciate our surroundings. She willingly went down back alleys with me when I thought I spied interesting graffiti and our near-daily visit to Leonidas chocolate...oh how I miss city living.
Outfit details: turtleneck- H&M, skirt- Forever 21, tights- street vendor, boots- some shop in Athens, necklace- Talonalia, bag- Pull and Bear

Fantastic boots! I like to buy clothes and jewelry instead of souvenirs, too. I also like when someone asks me where I got something and I get to respond, "oh, I picked it up when I was in ...."

Your skirt is beautiful! And those boots are gorgeous. I love it when I have clothing in my closet that remind me of a place I have traveled to. It's like wearing a piece of history and taking the memories with you wherever you go!

I did the same exact thing in Athens last month! I spent days searching for the perfect pair of boots, I ended up going home with the perfect pair of sandales, go figure... Your boots are killer though great find.

the boots are soooo nice! love them. and those tights are out of this world :)

I love those boots! They look fantastic with those tights. I've never been a fan of lace tights, but you wear them so well!!

i agree - clothing and accessories are way more memorable and useful than random trinkets. i usually try to hunt down some quirky jewelry - it's less to pack too!

glam.spoon said...

great boots! I do the same thing when I travel... a piece of clothing is the best souvenir.

junebabie said...

I use clothes as souvenirs too. I feel the same way- I know I'll use them, and love them for years to come. souvenirs mean less.
besides, when someone asks where you got your boots or your dress or your scarf, it's so fun to say a foreign country!

Athens is the most wonderful place to shop, isn't it? I have a necklace and an eggplant-purple dress I bought there that always take me back. Love it.

Such a cute outfit! I tend to do the same sort of souvenir buying with jewelry. That way every time I wear it, I remember a certain place and experience. Good times!

Ollie Otson said...

I'm exactly the same way when I go on vacation. Trinkets just sit on shelves and collect dust, but clothes get worn and reworked all the time.

I love your whole outfit. Lovely boots and those tights are amazing!

i totally agree - clothes rather than keychains and bottle openers are the best way to remember your fun and fantastic times abroad.

your stockings + boot combination are a dream. love the outfit :)

Amazing boots! Simple construction, yet it's not just an average pair of boots.

What you said about clothes and memories, that's why I don't "shop and drop", shop just to have more, give away what I only wore once. I have pieces that mean something and that I'd wear day in and out if I could.

Love the skirt! It's so shinyful and pretty ^^ Hey buying clothes as memorabilia is a really good idea! I've never really thought about it before, but I really should start doing that because the number of nick-nacks and useless key chains I've gathered over the years is getting a bit ridiculous XD

Not to be untoward or anything, but I’m going to Athens for my spring semester, and would you have pertinent (or random) information to know about the city and life over there? I would have sent this in an email, but I’m a bit technologically impaired when it comes to Microsoft Outlook.

Fabulous skirt -- Forever 21 has such great finds and you make their pieces look so high-end. The boots are fantastic, and the story that goes with them is even better -- it's nice when clothing comes with some history.

Amelia said...

Clothes are a really good way to preserve memories. Just from reading your blog last fall and from this story, I almost feel like I was there and that I am remembering it, too. I love your skirt!

Diane said...

One of my favorite things about clothes is the history and stories that they create and carry. I love thinking about the previous owners of the used clothing I buy, especially if it's particularly old. And it's the absolute best when I can remember buying a particular piece because of who I was with and/or what I was doing that day.

I quite like how this mostly black outfit has the pops of color with the red skirt and yellow bag. I've been attracted to a lot of black lately but currently fail at coming up with ways to make them look as chic as this! I've said it once (maybe even twice), but you really are a great stylist.

I've rambled on way too much, but one more thing I must say is: it would be totally epic if you lived in SF! At least if you do go to Loyola, it'd be in California (is it in L.A.?).

I am always really careful about what I buy because of the fact that I do invest so much memory in to them. I purposely have a smaller wardrobe than I would like so that everything that I do have really does mean something and is something I love. I guess clothes can bring those memories back in an instant in a way that a smell or a sensation does. Fabrics always have specific memories for me, like corduroy, which always brings back my childhood.

I absolutely love that skirt, the print is so so pretty! Hope you're having an utterly gorgeous weekend :)

I know exactly what you mean about wearing clothes that remind of you a place, even if they don't necessarily possess the essence of that place. I also forever remember clothes that I lost while traveling. I had this silk shirt with tassels that I left in a school dormitory in Paris and I still get ghost pangs of nostalgia for that shirt! And I have this scarf from Croatia that always reminds me of the sea even though the scarf doesn't really look particularly Croatian.

I hope you'll get to go back to Greece soon! You look so pretty in those boots and that whole outfit is wonderful!

I love this outfit. Framing the more complex pieces (skirt and tights) in black is perfect. I love having objects that have a story behind them. Not all of my clothes do, but a lot of the things I keep around me do. It's one reason why I love handmade things!

My Favourite Things said...

They're gorgeous :) It's so true about clothing or jewelry being able to evoke memories of a place or time. I actually went to Greece as well a couple of years ago (one of my favourite places in Europe!), and I bought an aquamarine ring and gold bracelet in Santorini that will forever remind me of the water, the sky, and the sun of the island.
