Bittersweet Welcome

If I had a choice in the matter I would live in a place of eternal summer. When it comes to fall and winter weather and temperatures I am a whining weakling. It's true, once the temperature drops below a certain point I start cranking up the heat and avoiding the outdoors as much as possible. Further, once it snows my condition worsens; I've had too many disastrous falls on ice to look on a winter wonderland without misgivings.
However, there are many things I do enjoy about this season, so I am attempting to focus on those. First up is my love affair with all things pumpkin related; from carving them up, to cooking the seeds, and munching on other pumpkin baked goods. Another thing I love is fall color; leaves going from green to rich, saturated hues is so pretty to watch. I also enjoy a long, dark night; they're the perfect setting for a crackling fire and a book and they always just seem so mysterious and full of potential...Family gatherings tend to occur around the holidays too and even though the last family winter trip was canceled due to snow (grrr...), my family was still all together in one place. One of the best features of fall and winter? Holidays; over indulgence in rich food, parties, and gifts are all quite welcome holiday features.
So, despite the fact that I'll probably twist my ankle before the cold season is over, there are still certain things to look forward to...

i wish i could agree about the cold weather, i'd love to snuggle up next to a fire right now. instead, i'm still wearing tank tops and sandals. trust me, you'd miss the seasons if you didn't have them. your dress is great and i love the belt!

What a great coat!...and dress, and shoes:)I agree with you...I too am sometimes suspicious of what winter brings (having slipped on ice and split my chin a few years ago), but you're also right that there is something special and mysterious and magical about the colder seasons. And layering is often fun:)

Beautiful beautiful photos! October's one of my favorite months, the leaves, pumpkins & pumpkin pie, hot apple cider, and delicious apple cider donuts.

But after October, well I really don't like the cold, haha.

Love the dress & shoes, this outfit is so nice!

autumn is beautiful! I remember I used to hate the Chicago winters, so harsh and cold. But now that I'm in weather limbo, like 70s all the time, i really miss seeing the leaves turn colors and snow!

Although I am glad that Fall is here, I know I'll get sick of the colder temperatures once Winter comes and rears its ugly head.

I love the socks and shoe combination - it's so adorable! And I always love it when you wear that incredible dress.

I normally love the winter, but this year, all it seems to be is rain and wind, not the best, you feel like a drowned rat most of the day haha! Your dress is gorgeous, I love the colours, and I love how you wear the socks with them shoes :)

love love love the dress, the bag, and especially the shoes with the socks in them!
and yes, i feel the same way. i can't stand the cold. Anything under about 17 degrees Celsius is unexceptable. Pretty stupid for me to be living in Holland then huh? ;)

Meaghan Kelly said...

Aww, being a Canadian I can totally relate to being upset by colder weather! My teeny dog doesn't much like the snow either seeing as it sort of swallows her up!
You're looking lovely! good luck warming up! :)

I just love your dress! It looks so perfect with the little coat and shoes. I am odd about the cold - I hate the feeling of being incurably cold, but I love cold weather clothes. And being in the south, it's still somehow welcome after many months of 90+ temperatures!

haha, you silly girl. but i do understand. it doesn't even snow here and honestly, i already had the space heater on.

and your photos are beautiful. i kinda think i need to visit washington someday. i can't believe i've never been there!

The detailing on the belt is gorgeous just like this outfit and you :)

ah, Ive been playing with this look too, the dress, socks and mens shoes. I love the simplicity of it.

I would probably feel exactly the same way about snow if it weren't a rare short-lived event in Atlanta! I'd hate to have snow that gets all muddy and wet and lasts for weeks. Ew.
Also, love the little nerdy touch of socks with your brown shoes! I've been wearing these dorky little grandpa socks I found a lot lately. What is it about Fall??

Lucy in the Sky said...

Washington looks so rustic. You should take a trip to LA if the cold is really bugging you. 85 degrees is the high today! Meanwhile, here in San Diego, we've got plenty of sunshine but the lack of foliage means that it's a little chilly outside.

I love this time of the year because of the holidays and family gatherings, too (but that's really it). Oh and also the fact that I can put on more layers and show off my clothes teehee

i like the romantic version of winter. snow, crackling fire, winter cabins, snuggling in bed with a loved one, reading books, hot water bottles. ahhhh. i dislike the rain, the wind, having to get out of bed in the morning to go to work when it is so cold etc etc but overall i think i prefer the cold to the heat

I have to agree I'm not a cold weather fan at all! Though it usually doesn't get cold enough here so that there's ice and snow fortunately - otherwise I'd be on my bottom most of the time! It's grey and blustery here and of course it's been raining as usual!

You look lovely lovely lovely! That dress is gorgeous and those shoes are fantastic

I'm not a big fan of cold days myself (although it's springtime here, it's still pretty chilly right now). You just mentioned a whole lot of wonderful things that make it well worth the shivering temperature though!

I love your fall outfit too :)

so with you on that - well done to think of three things you like! i would have stuck with pumpkin. and ours aren't even orange, they're grey...

It looks absolutely beatiful! I moved to Washington, D.C. from Portland, Oregon, and I truly miss that scenery! The Pacific Northwest is beautiful every time of year :o) Your dress is very fitting for the time :o) I would add some wool tights though, I hate when the cold bites my legs!

Kop said...

Fall in the Northwest is like the Superbowl of fashion. Everyone has so many layers! I'm in eastern WA and it's getting a bit too cold a bit too fast.

Thanks for exposing readers to the talon jewelry store.

I wish I could just wrap myself in the browns and oranges and yellows of fall. They are so warm and nostalgic for me. I would trade fall for any amount of sunlight. Even if the autumn rains make the leaves mushy instead of crunchy...

Emily said...

Oh goodness, I love anything and everything pumpkin related. Yum! Fall is my favorite season, but the only thing I don't care for in regards to it is its prelude to winter. Winters here can be a bear and that's when I start to whine and complain. I've decided that this year I'm going to attempt ''making nice'' with winter and not unleash the full force of my grumbling about it ;)

Beautiful autumnal outfit, by the way. The greens and browns are very pretty together.

juliamarisa said...

that is my favorite dress of yours, i think.

I have a very romanticized relationship with cold weather, I have come to realize. When it's hot I wish it were cold and snowy so I could bundle up and wear layers and drink coco. However, when actually faced with freezing temperatures I'm a big baby and run from one heated building to the next!

In other news, it's still in the high 70s here. :( and so, it seems the grass is always greener.

The second picture is just adorable! I love the pairing of the dress with the socks and shoes. And anything pumpkin related is fantastic...pumpkin ice cream is my favorite (next to mint chocolate chip) and the seasonal pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks are quite delicious. And then there's pumpkin muffins, and of course pumpkin pie...oh dear. I need to go scrounge up some pumpkin foods ASAP.

Weirdly, I'm actually so happy for winter to come. Of course, I hate it when it's COMING... I wish it could be sunny and hot, a tad chilly with red leaves, and then bam, amazing white snow everywhere.
ps: I absolutely love love love this outfit. LOVE.

Brittany Noel said...

I'm totally with you. I hate the winter, and that has made it hard for me to embrace the fall like I think I should. It's getting easier as I'm forced to reckon with it. Pumpkin, leaves, everything... I'm enjoying it, but a little reluctantly.

Besides, wearing more layers means I have to do laundry way more often!

sarahq said...

I live in Singapore! Which would be what you'd call a place of eternal summer. Sometimes, the weather here simply gets too warm that I even start perspiring just after I have taken a shower!

On the other hand, I'm really envious that you get to experience the four seasons and the changing scenery. Plus you get to don pretty trench coats, boots and play with layering. Which are kind of fun, I think. And autumn leaves and snow, and a cosy fireplace. It's everything I ever dreamed of!!! Perhaps the other side is always greener. (:

Meg said...

I agree, I'm much more of a summer person. I don't like to be cold!

I love your shoes!

Freddie said...

I love pumpkin things. So much.

Anyway, you look superb in your fall attire, so I hope you'll enjoy and hopefully not get hurt ;) haha

indigotangerine said...

i'm the opposite. I love the crispness in the air in winter. It just make me focus in instead of being my lethargic summer self. I love all the things you mentioned plus cozy flannel covered down comforters (which make getting up so much harder in the morining) You really have a nack of picking out such lovely fallish hues and patterns.

i feel you - two winters ago i refused to sop wearing heels even though the lovely cleveland winter had dumped over a foot of snow on the ground... needless to say, i fell and pulled all of the muscles in my back AND got a concussion... and spent the next week in bed. i still refuse to take off my heels, now i just put those sticky pads on the bottom of them and make sure they're not tooooo high...
