Bows and Bandits

For my latest post on World Ugly I'm investigating the dirndl dress. When I was little my family lived in Germany for a few years and for some reason or another my mother thought it fit to dress us all in dirndl dresses, complete with frilled white blouses and socks. With runways from Miu Miu to Anna Sui taking inspiration from the dirndl I decided to get my hands on one.
The vintage originals can be hard to track down, but are worth the hunt with their beautiful embroidered details and quality fabric. Thankfully, Bows and Bandits is fully stocked with gorgeous dirndl dresses in a variety of colors and sizes, which takes a lot of drama out of the hunt.
For its first outing I donned the dirndl dress backwards, which takes out the Oktoberfest vibe of the dress.

I pulled out one of my coziest sweaters for a cooler day and headed down to the closest seashore for a bit of release. The rhythmic sound of the waves lapping against the rocky shore is the most soothing one I know and while it isn't the most beautiful beach I have ever seen, I am so grateful to live near the water...

I really love your dress with the belt and flats. It's so beautiful and the background makes it even more so!

awesome sweater. not to mention dress:) but actually, it's getting colder in my country so i'd rather stick to sweaters now.

That dress is gorgeous, the detailing on the bottom is lovely! Your shoes look so comfy. Ahh, that cardigan of yours is amazing. I'd desperate to find a cardigan similar, in a dark colour :)

Oh cool! I didn't know that shop..
I'm Austrian and used to wear Dirndl a lot as a kid..but kind of hated in it my teenage years. Now I'm older and again in love with traditional clothes.

i have always wanted to hava a dirndl, even when i was a little girl, but my mum never let me wear one. quite sad considering i live only 3 hours away from munich:D

When you first said "dirndl dress" I thought of something totally extravagant and over the top frilly, but this is really elegant and totally wearable.
I love going to the beach at wintertime too, its so peaceful.

The dirndl dress looks terrific backwards; it looks as though it's just meant to be worn like that, plus the low back shows off your tattoos. Nicely done.

You wear a dirndl well! It looks awesome on backwards, particularly with your tattoos. When I was in Munich I came across massive shops selling traditional dress to the tourists...alot of the stuff was really pretty! I swore I'd go back one day when I wasn't so poor.

I'm also becoming increasingly jealous of your hair colour! It always looks lovely against colours. I may have to attempt to dye my mousey mop a similar shade..

Can I just thank you for introducing Bows and Bandits?? I am loving the garments on their site.

Your dirndl dress is lovely. As is that UO cardigan. It does look supremely cozy :)

I agree with you. The sound of lapping waves is very soothing. Its calming effect is just as strong for me as is the sound of wind rustling through tall grasses or tree tops.

sparkle motion said...

i really enjoy your red sweater. also you seem to live in the most scenic of places, lovely photos

indigotangerine said...

I like the folky feel both the dress and sweater has. I really like how you turned the dress around to give it the low back. And I want to steal that sweater and hide out in a snowy woods. It reminds me of that childrens book "The Mitten" by Jan Brett.

The drindl dress worn backwards works surprisingly well! It's very cute. And the decoration isn't too over the top so I bet it looks great right way round as well.

Oh my, I actually like the Dirndl on you (I don't like them very much....). You should come back to germany and tell all the Bavarians at the Oktoberfest (which is actually going on right at this moment) to put all their Dirndls on backwards or wear them with cozy sweaters ;)

Your dress is gorgeous, i really love the first one! Everything about it is really nice. So is the cardigan :)

Gosh i wanna experience living near the water, i bet it's great. Having the chance to play near the water everyday. We live near the dessert...it's not as exciting.

Orchid Grey said...

ahhh, I have a dirndl dress too! my mother grew up in Germany and used to dress me in the German national costume more frequently than was necessary! This also included a large closet full of Leiderhosen. yep. I was rocking leather shorts at the ripe old age of six.

Beautiful outfits, I like that you took something so traditional and made it work to todays standards.

Haha I wouldn't never thought to wear a dirndl dress that way!
