Turn Your Face To The Sun

I'm drawn to Edward Hopper's paintings at the moment (isn't it interesting how one goes through different "moods" in art cravings?). I really appreciate his masterful use of light in these rather summery paintings, which set the mood for a scene of cinematic proportions; fitting since Hopper was inspired by film (among other things).

Your doodle is very pretty. Man I love the word doodle! These paintings are very you, I can picture you in all of them. Your blog is very beautiful and natural, I am quite smitten. Long time reader, not a first time poster. Would love it if you could stop by some time and follow me.

Oh I love Edward Hopper! The way he captured tension and mood was incredible. Bit of a cliche, but nighthawks is my favourite.

Is so true what he said.
I love it, I didn't know his work, until now! I'll look at his work, is very inspiring.
Thanks for share!

I like the first one best. You're right about his masterful use of lighting. :) I had a hard time with drawing/painting in past art classes because I always forgot about shadows.. haha. I much prefer photography, but I love seeing a realistic painting.

Once again, thanks for introducing me to a wonderful artist!

He's one of my favorite artists. Did you ever see Gregory Crewdson photo series? They're definitely filmic and inspired by Hopper's work too. Love them, they're very thought provoking...

I adore Edward Hopper. I love the one of the girl who works in a movie theatre.

These are such interesting paintings. Whenever I think of Edward Hopper, I think of his paintings depicting people eating alone in cafes, or paintings of empty gas stations. It's nice to see that he had a lighter side to his work too.

I envision them hanging in a cottage somewhere peaceful. I have a reply to that quote -- If a picture could say everything, there would be no reason to write.

Manja said...

Oh wow, those really do look like movie stills!

I was just reading about Hopper and his insane relationship with his wife a few days ago!

I love Edward Hopper not only for his subject matter, but also for his brushstrokes, which are obvious without being ostentatious. Whenever I'm at a museum and I find a painting with nice texture, I always lean waaaaaaaay close -- and then quickly look around to make sure I'm not going to get yelled at!

hopper was so skilled both in painting itself, but his rich subjects. there is something very Mad Men in these stark colorful, but quite lonely panintings

I agree--I'm on a Hopper kick myself. I bought a book of his work at a used book store recently. I especially love the colors he uses. He has a lot to teach.

I'm really bad at describing art and paintings but I really like the way he uses colors and how his characters look so real! They're so delicate! xxoxoxoxo

i love edward hopper, his paintings are so natural and a little bittersweet. they make me nostaligic for some reason.

i actually saw his work in person and was suprised by how...underwhelmed I was. From far off his lighting is incredible but from upclose it becomes apparent that he was not talented at painting faces. And some of his pieces were oddly two dimensional. I was dissapointed, especially since I'd been so excited for the exhibit.

Yeah, I definitely go through different "moods," too. That quote is spot on.

Yes, I agree, many of Edward Hopper's paintings are great! I have reproductions of "Gas" (1940) and "Nighthawks" (1942) on my wall.

My parents' friends, the ones who have the glass/ceramic studio that I featured a while back, have a New Year's Eve party every year. Each party, they pick a painting and have all of the guests recreate it on a piece of canvas. The year I was there, they did a Hopper. It was so cool to see a collaboration like that!

i love edward hopper too- i like the way he plays with light. have you seen his 'rooms by the sea'? i look at it all the time and wish i could live in that room! ~joelle

I really like these, so interesting. And that quote is genius.

Love Hopper. One of my favorite things about him, is his use of pinks and reds, usually towards the middle of the canvas. A great example is the Automat from 1927, with the bowl of fruit in the middle.

I'm a big Hopper fan myself. Despite his notoriously poor technical skills in painting, his images are so beautifully composed and, as you said, cinematic. Whenever I comment, I feel as though I am applauding you for something and this time it is exposing people to a fantastic American artist.

She is quite unrelated to Hopper, but, if you do not already know her work, you should check out fiber artist Sandra Backlund. She does amazing things with knitting apparel.
