There Are New Clothes On The Clothes Rack Should I Feel Like One Of Them

I was thinking about personal style recently...to me, personal style is a reflection of the individual; it is a form of expression and a nonverbal communication to the world. That said, if our style becomes consistently the same, does that mean we are no longer progressing? If we claim that our style reflects us, then shouldn't it be in constant evolution because shouldn't we be in constant growth? Does this mean that personal style is not a state of being but rather a process? Can we describe our style in adjectives or should we be using verbs? The whole contemplation leaves me with more questions than answers...
Well, in the favor of non-stagnation I got this dress on sale from Urban Outfitters. A simple little black dress like this can be styled in so many ways--I'm especially liking the idea of layering a sweater over it in the winter, but it was so hot when I tried to take the pictures that most of the looks in this remix are summery.

fascinator- vintage, tights- Betsey Johnson via Modcloth, shoes- vintage

Also, the winner of the ShopRuche handbag (chosen by random number generator) is: Claradevi of Sunflares Plethora. Congratulations!

You look so lovely - again! Such a wonderful selection of inspiring outfits.

Thank you for letting me use some of your pictures for my Alice collage which is due to be up later this week. I think I chose a different one from the one I first suggested so I hope you don't mind. I will let you know when it's up!

LOVE both pairs of the nine west shoes, and your leopard jacket is absolutely amazing! I want a leopard jacket now, even though it's eighty degrees out! you look very nice and classy in black.

I Love the scarves in your hair. and I really like the black and white combo with matching shoes. And I really like the outfit pairing with all the green in your hair and purse. It looks like I need to go to urban outfitters for wedges because I haven't found ones I like.

Verbs to describe style...that's a very intriguing idea. I might have to try it sometime, see if I can make it work.

Little black dresses are quite amazing. I inherited one from my mother, and it's one of the most versatile pieces in my closet.

All fabulous looks, love the scarf and vest look the most! I agree, style should evolve as we do. I can't possibly have the same style for 20 years! ICK!

I believe it is never a waste to have simple little black dress. Sometimes I feel that people think they are only to be used in funerals. I miss them.

you have such an awesome style that I could never pull off. I really like the wall that you photograph with. :)

AlicePleasance said...

I think style is definitely a process, but it doesn't change everyday...sometimes it looks the same for ages and then it changes quickly twice in a year. You never can say...
That dress is a stunning and so versatile, like only a LBD can be!!

Claradevi said...

Black dress is truly magical. And, because of your remixes, now it's addictive. Great job!

I think our personal style can be included as parts of the process - or probably the giving-meaning act to such process. But somehow it is contextual, as the case and the way we perceive it can be different from one to another... My style is normally changing by the time and I'm aware of that. Some people I knew, otherwise, need a certain line of statement that can articulate their core identity; and it should be something consistent, something eminent. Shown by their personal-style, then... But it's a mistery - I never quite sure myself with this answer. At least i'm thinking about it now, and lets see if I can come up with better answers next time... :)

all the outfits are so cute! i love the flower in your hair in the last pic. is that a real flower? or a hair accessory thing?

I think one of the bigger questions you are asking is: "is the self something essential? Or is it something that perpetually shifts? Am I betraying myself by shifting, or should I not shift at all?

I have no answer to you (sorry!) but I sort of see myself as growing into myself. I experiment with my style for instance, in order to find my essential style that reflects the true me, and when I find it, I will settle. My self discovery is very alchemical in that sense. Alot the people I admire had one particular look that embodied them entirely (their golden template if you will ;) I am sure, however, there are many others who defined themselves in their lack of defintion.

Gabbi said...

Great remix, my most favorites being the scarf in your hair photo and the striped top layered look and shoes.

Also, you're right about style needing to change if it truly is an expression of who we are as people... good thought for the day!

I'm curious to know if you think in your head, how many ways you can wear a piece, before purchasing it? You definitely see clothings in a unique exciting way. Tucking dresses into skirts, i'd never think of that!

K.Line said...

Adorable remixes! I can't choose which one I like the best.

doublysweet said...

i love how you showed some of the mnay ways one piece can be utilized/is versatile.
it's almost as if the viewer is watching a change in style take place--especially neat because that's what you were talking about!

I adore the first look! I know you don't wear really stand out make up, but it would look wonderful with red lips and smoky eyes.

Lauren! said...

that dress is totally cute on you! I got a great Paul & Joe dress on sale at Urban. Also (idk why I'm telling you this) I went to a garage sale at my friend's café this weekend, which was actually a garage giveaway since he wasn't pricing anything. and got this kids dress for free that his ex-girlfriend had. It's black and blue plaid with buttons and although I had to cut the neck open to get my head through it, I've gotten tons of compliments.

I was actually thinking about stagnant style, etc. just yesterday. I've kind of dressed the same since I was in high school. Soft, snippety t-shirts with homemade or tiered or pleated patterned skirts and flats. Since I've been at school I've been wearing skinny jeans with coats and short boots, but my style hasn't changed that much. I definitely need a remix of my own. Also the only 3 non-thrift store cool places to shop without driving to salt lake are now officially out of business. Which blows.

Wow, I'm talkative today.

jess said...

What a cute dress. I love it with the polka dotted tights. They are all great remixes.

i do not feel that style is a reflection of personality, but your post got me thinking.

also - i love when you wear the scarf on your head! it's so cute.

Lovely! I completely over-wore black when I was an angsty teenager and ever since have had a bit of a fear of wearing it. Now I overcompensate a bit by being very colourful! Recently however I've become addicted to checking up on The Uniform Project every day to see how she's styled her black dress and it's been really inspiring, as are these pictures. More and more I keep being drawn to things which aren't really stereotypical 'me'. I think it's exciting to do this :)

Such interesting thoughts on the evolution of personal style. It reminds me of how Spanish has 2 different verbs for "to be": "estar" (a temporary state that will be in flux) and "ser" (a permanent state).

miriam said...

i love how you carry off your mother's scarf. beautiful!

Emily said...

Ah, a very thought provoking post. I feel that personal style is more a partial reflection of who the individual is for reasons of growth, progression, etc. I like your idea of describing style with verbs.

The striped dress/striped shoes remix is very cute :)

wow that dress is perfect, so great for remixes. I love the first one, and the one with the green belt, looks so pretty!!

I know what you mean about changing styles - a year ago I lived in jeans, now it's dresses and crazy coloured tights and experimenting, but I suppose in a few years I'll tone down the crazy and wear more classic stuff. I guess it's got to do with growing up and life progressing, as you said, but it makes me kinda irritated. I don't want my style to be stagnant but I don't want to have to completely change because I'm "grown up" and have to start acting like an adult.

sorry for the rant. I have this extreme peter pan complex as you can probably tell :P

muchlove said...

nothing is quite as versatile than a LBD. Lovely.

beautifulnemo said...

Well if personal style is a reflection of the individual then you are just an amazing girl as I supposed:)

As Claradevi said, I also think it's contextual. Anyways yes, but it's also so relative, because in our opinion our personal style can reflect our personality, different thoughts, different moments, different moods. All them are special for us and they are somehow reflected on us. But then not everybody can see it, or appreciate it in the same way.

I like your opinion of us changing continously. I don't like when ppl told me "don't change". I mean, I know they said that in a positive way because they liked me in that way, but we ALWAYS can and (I think) have to change, in a better way.

Oh an another comment was alright, in Spanish we have 2 verbs for "be": SER & ESTAR, which are difficult to use for foreigners that learn Spanish BUTTT are so useful and so TRUE! They have totally different ideas.

PS. I love that tights, I saw some like that in Vogue or any other magazine and I told my mum I wanted them:)
PS2. I love Urban Outfitters, but we don't have it in Spain, sigh.
PS3. I decided to finish my comment, otherwise you would start sleeping before finishing it:)

My favourites are the green belt and fascinator combo, and the one with the striped dress layered under.

jayne said...

once again all of these looks are great but I love the double stripes & anything with that skinny green belt, wow!

your thoughts on personal style are very interesting. I think as well evolve personally, some aspects of ourselves stay the same so personal style can be reflected this way...but yes it should evolve a little with ourselves too

Trains and Sewing Machines said...

Personal style is definitely an interesting concept. I've alway thought that with style, I am a canvas and creating an outfit to wear is like creating a piece of art. Therefore, my style hopefully reflects the creativity that went into choosing the outfit. Of course there are things like..if I just feel like being comfy and wearing sweats, that is another story but I think you get what I mean :)

I love your remixes! This a really versatile dress! I especially like that stripey outfit :)

I think personal style is indeed a never ending process and it's more about feeling comfortable in certain pieces than making sth your "trademark". It can be a long talk, but on that "it's about the journey not the destination side

I think consciously or not your style will evolve. At least, that's what happened to me throughout these past years. You go thorugh life changes as well as physical so I think with that comes a new perspective of clothing and the way it makes you feel.
I love these outfit remix's. My personal fave is the scarf worn as a headband, it can add dress up any outfit.

Interesting post. I think every person is in constantly changing and that style does follow suit, but not with every change. I think the main question is when does what we find appealing change? This dictates our style.

Personal style can remain the same for a long time that way. Or in the span of a few months can change because of some large stimulus in the person's life...Or slowly over time; I suppose it just depends what we are exposing ourselves to and what we are learning.

I am rambling kind of. I hope that made sense.

Amelia said...

Wow, that's so interesting. I definitely do see personal style as evolving, but it has elements that stay the same, which to a certain extent, is true of the individual, too. What sort of verbs would you use, though?

I love the dress with the cheetah jacket! I can't imagine how you wore that in this heat, though.

I really liked your thoughts on personal style. For me, I love vintage clothing and I really admire women who can pull off the 1940s look consistently. And although I would love to do what they do, I know I can't because I also love clothes from the 60s and even the 80s and 90s sometimes. I like changing things up. I like "evolving" like you said. And just like I've grown the past few years so has my personal style and I can't wait to see what I come up with tomorrow. And with inspirational bloggers like yourself to inspire me, I'm looking forward to what's to come. For instance the way you remix and use pieces in different ways, it makes me excited to see what new things I can come up with in my closet. Thank you!
