Vee Spears's stark images of children in homemade costumes titled "The Birthday Party" is an interesting play on contrasts. The children are dressed whimsically but stare at us with somber expressions. They remind us of childhood, but don't grant us any of the innocence of those years.

Stunning. Personally this speaks better to my memory of childhood than any other works I have seen - I was never innocent :)
wooow. this is such an imaginative and original idea, but rather creepy I do have to say - especially the second and third to last shots of those two little girls - it's almost disturbing to see small children dressed as adults with make up and fishnet stockings - and to me it seems an interpretation of the way children lose their innocence so fast these days and are thrust into situations that are almost inappropriate for their ages. This is one hell of a amazing and thought provoking photoshoot.
These images are amazing, and very well thought out. Kids aren't really kids for long nowadays. They're older at such a young age, which is weird, and kinda scary.
xxxx
I see what you mean, it's without the usual nostalgia of grown- ups
This editorial is very creative. I love the picture of the girl blowing a bubble. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and these shots definitely do that phrase justice.
Great photos! I especially love the angel...perhaps because she's not the ordinary angel in white?
Anyway, very interesting concept. Thanks for sharing!
The images are beautiful! They do remind me of making my own homemade costumes. You are right, the kids' faces are somewhat disturbing and cold, childhood is so different today, it's actually a shame.

there is something very haunting and sad about these photos
I love it, so harsh. I think some people would find this disturbing, but I find it enchanting!
Oh, I love these types of photos! They're incredibly haunting and to say the least, make me feel uncomfortable.
Is it weird to think that I want that sailor romper in the penultimate photo?
Okay, these are scary. But in a good way. Those would look great framed and hung on a big white wall.
Lovely pictures!
i am not a fan of these pictures. child modeling is odd enough ... this is just discomforting.
Haunting. I like them a lot.
Youth without youth... such interesting costumes and expressions.
These kind of look sad. Like the people in the pictures are trying to reach out for help..I dk..I can be really random :P
These are disturbingly stunning. I agree completely with your description of them.
wow, there's something very haunting about those.

Me han gustado mucho tus fotos, todas las que tienes!! son preciosas!!!
;-)
oh i love the 2nd and the 3rd pics... the girls are so adorable... they look like fashionista already

I love the girl with the bouffant hair-it's just cute
very interesting photographs. he almost "sexualizes" the children, making me feel as if he's commenting on the way children are maturing up too fast and leaving actual children things behind. they very much remind me of that diane arbus's pictures of chldren.
i love it, though it scares me. children shouldn't be any other than the innocent and naive little 'things' they are.
I really have been thinking about 'grown up' fairytales as of late. Revisiting those childhood favourites in later years really does change the way we view them. The dreamy wonder is replaced by a more functional outlook. But I'm not sure that is always a bad thing. The dark forgotten corners of the fairytale world are the most interesting. And I must say I really do love these images, there is an odd play on innocence and kid-ulthood.
Hope you're having a lovely weekend dear :)
Definitely scary yet fascinating. Make me think of Diane Arbus' pic of Cathleen and Coleen...
Just put up some good Atlanta graffiti & more to come.
That beehive is cracking me up. So B-52s
Creepy creative? :p
Those last 2 girls have actually very wearable outfits! I love that sailor romper! The quirkiness of the shots is also fun. Thanks for sharing
These scare me. Pretty yes, but there's something really freaky about them. Interesting.
They're so haunting in such a fascinating way.
Wow. Absolutely stunning. There's something so bittersweet about these photos. It makes you wonder.
Hmmm...they are a little bit "knowing", aren't they these children? Wonderfully imaginative costumes though and rather lovely as a result!
Wow. There is something incredibly eerie and Alice-In-Wonderlandish about these portraits. The girl in white lace with the slumped rabbit scares me to death. The contrast between the youth of the children and the quite adult stares, outfits and situations is frightening for me.
very unique. i dig it.
awesome. i love it.
so much imagination.
xx
such an amazing photos! love the tones and the idea!
Those photos are amazing!
P.S. I nominated you for a Kreativ Blogger award on my blog today! Check it out.
pictures of children in the vain of fine art seriously creep me out and these are no exception, but in a really great way. love the 4th one.
this is a really wonderful shoot, but I must say that it is rather creepy. i mean like you said, the innocence isn't there, and it's kind of startling. i can't even express my feelings about these pictures, although the photos are amazing.
These are amazing! I agree with everyone else in the sense that they are a bit disturbing but I feel that it definitely gets the point across so much more with the mood lighting and the expressions.

i especially love the girl with the dolls. it has the same chilling effect as the work of sally man http://www.sallymann.org/
Wow! These photos are beautiful, yet very eerie.
incredible! some of those little girls have a mature look to their faces that i find rather disturbing
Thanks for sharing this. Really cool.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing...
XoXo
ha, maybe their paleness is supposed to represent the band "the birthday party". either way, very interesting
i love all the girls outfit and the boys boxing glove.
These are so bizarre. I love how washed out they are.
great photos. i like the girl with silver hair in a white dress the most! :)
What amazing photos. I am speechless.
I'm a new follower :)
These photos are eerie but I'm drawn to them! I don't think I'd have the guts to pose with a dead rabbit at that age.
wow, those photos are...i can't quite find the right word.
beautifully done. the girl with the white hair and dress particularly stands out!
hmm, not sure about these images. children should remain children as long as possible. i do like the pink dress & hair on one girl even though it makes her look too adult. an interesting concept all the same.
The concept is interesting, but some of the children look really creepy to me, especially the girl with the dolls. The bird/angel girl however is really cute.
Btw: I featured you on my new blog, you can read the entry here :http://feathersandair.blogspot.com/2009/08/recommended-blog-clothes-horse.html
The second set. That little girl's hair is woah.
adore your blog! feel free to stop by!
this is quite eerie, the hairstyles remind me those from the film the grinch...weird hair styles on children are always strange..love the sailor suit too but the fishnets on a child seem just the bad side of wrong!
Very powerful images...quite spooky though
these are awesomeee - you always manage to find the best photos.
although, it is just a tad bit scary. lol. amazing nonetheless.
<3 V.
these pictures are kind of scary, in the most creative way possible. they look like 3-ft models. which really doesn't remind me of innocence at all.

Beauty pictures!!

oh these are simply beautiful!!!
well done for posting them on your blog! a great find!
:)
mildly disturbing but what a great concept
it's wonderful...i love how, unlike most child images, it's very adult-like and not exactly creepy. it's not mischievous either, to me.
This shoot is very interesting.
Now I want to dress my little sister up! No... I'll let her enjoy her childhood innocence and fun! :)
You know, this is sort of creepy, but I'm dying to see more! I love the girl on the right of the second to last row
Oh my God! How cute is that! I love it! Especially the little girl with the hoop skirt and the beehive!!!!
Woahh what a sureal shoot! It's kinda creepy but at the same time amazing!
Ooh these are kinda weird, the children seems knowinging yet innocent at the same time. They reminds me of Tim Burton's characters!
wow love these pictures !
awww! they're are too precious. xo, v
these photos are so eerie and beautiful. the remind me a little of Loretta Lux- if you haven't seen her photos you might like her! she uses children in interesting costumes and backdrops too.
The two that stood out to me are 1) the girl with black angel wings 2) the last girl in the harlequin dress, harlequin continues to intrigue me, it does something to you right?
i love the these, especially the little sailor girl. how adorable!
Haunting but awe inspiring! I like the second row of pictures best.
This is intriguing!!
so sweet photos ;-)
these are such beautiful, intriguing images. Thanks for sharing!
That fourth pic! I want that hair and dress!
you're right, they dont look like they have any innocence at all.. creepy but beautiful at the same time.
