The Birthday Party

Vee Spears's stark images of children in homemade costumes titled "The Birthday Party" is an interesting play on contrasts. The children are dressed whimsically but stare at us with somber expressions. They remind us of childhood, but don't grant us any of the innocence of those years.

Stunning. Personally this speaks better to my memory of childhood than any other works I have seen - I was never innocent :)

wooow. this is such an imaginative and original idea, but rather creepy I do have to say - especially the second and third to last shots of those two little girls - it's almost disturbing to see small children dressed as adults with make up and fishnet stockings - and to me it seems an interpretation of the way children lose their innocence so fast these days and are thrust into situations that are almost inappropriate for their ages. This is one hell of a amazing and thought provoking photoshoot.

These images are amazing, and very well thought out. Kids aren't really kids for long nowadays. They're older at such a young age, which is weird, and kinda scary.

I see what you mean, it's without the usual nostalgia of grown- ups

This editorial is very creative. I love the picture of the girl blowing a bubble. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and these shots definitely do that phrase justice.

Great photos! I especially love the angel...perhaps because she's not the ordinary angel in white?
Anyway, very interesting concept. Thanks for sharing!

The images are beautiful! They do remind me of making my own homemade costumes. You are right, the kids' faces are somewhat disturbing and cold, childhood is so different today, it's actually a shame.

there is something very haunting and sad about these photos

I love it, so harsh. I think some people would find this disturbing, but I find it enchanting!

Diane said...

Oh, I love these types of photos! They're incredibly haunting and to say the least, make me feel uncomfortable.

Is it weird to think that I want that sailor romper in the penultimate photo?

Meream said...

Okay, these are scary. But in a good way. Those would look great framed and hung on a big white wall.

Lovely pictures!

i am not a fan of these pictures. child modeling is odd enough ... this is just discomforting.

Haunting. I like them a lot.

Youth without youth... such interesting costumes and expressions.

FabBlab said...

These kind of look sad. Like the people in the pictures are trying to reach out for help..I dk..I can be really random :P

These are disturbingly stunning. I agree completely with your description of them.

very interesting photographs. he almost "sexualizes" the children, making me feel as if he's commenting on the way children are maturing up too fast and leaving actual children things behind. they very much remind me of that diane arbus's pictures of chldren.

Fannah said...

i love it, though it scares me. children shouldn't be any other than the innocent and naive little 'things' they are.

I really have been thinking about 'grown up' fairytales as of late. Revisiting those childhood favourites in later years really does change the way we view them. The dreamy wonder is replaced by a more functional outlook. But I'm not sure that is always a bad thing. The dark forgotten corners of the fairytale world are the most interesting. And I must say I really do love these images, there is an odd play on innocence and kid-ulthood.

Hope you're having a lovely weekend dear :)

Definitely scary yet fascinating. Make me think of Diane Arbus' pic of Cathleen and Coleen...

Those last 2 girls have actually very wearable outfits! I love that sailor romper! The quirkiness of the shots is also fun. Thanks for sharing

These scare me. Pretty yes, but there's something really freaky about them. Interesting.

They're so haunting in such a fascinating way.

Wow. Absolutely stunning. There's something so bittersweet about these photos. It makes you wonder.

Sam said...

Hmmm...they are a little bit "knowing", aren't they these children? Wonderfully imaginative costumes though and rather lovely as a result!

Wow. There is something incredibly eerie and Alice-In-Wonderlandish about these portraits. The girl in white lace with the slumped rabbit scares me to death. The contrast between the youth of the children and the quite adult stares, outfits and situations is frightening for me.

pictures of children in the vain of fine art seriously creep me out and these are no exception, but in a really great way. love the 4th one.

this is a really wonderful shoot, but I must say that it is rather creepy. i mean like you said, the innocence isn't there, and it's kind of startling. i can't even express my feelings about these pictures, although the photos are amazing.

Jessica said...

These are amazing! I agree with everyone else in the sense that they are a bit disturbing but I feel that it definitely gets the point across so much more with the mood lighting and the expressions.

These photos are eerie but I'm drawn to them! I don't think I'd have the guts to pose with a dead rabbit at that age.

Melissa Blake said...

wow, those photos are...i can't quite find the right word.

surimay said...

beautifully done. the girl with the white hair and dress particularly stands out!

PinkBow said...

hmm, not sure about these images. children should remain children as long as possible. i do like the pink dress & hair on one girl even though it makes her look too adult. an interesting concept all the same.

Corinna said...

The concept is interesting, but some of the children look really creepy to me, especially the girl with the dolls. The bird/angel girl however is really cute.

this is quite eerie, the hairstyles remind me those from the film the grinch...weird hair styles on children are always strange..love the sailor suit too but the fishnets on a child seem just the bad side of wrong!

these pictures are kind of scary, in the most creative way possible. they look like 3-ft models. which really doesn't remind me of innocence at all.

it's wonderful...i love how, unlike most child images, it's very adult-like and not exactly creepy. it's not mischievous either, to me.
