Now, not every alien appearing in a work of fiction is nude, especially in novels. However, it is common in many films for extraterrestrials to appear to have advanced technology from us and yet be unclothed.
Could this be a statement on their complete advancement? Aliens that reach Earth when we are unable to move beyond our own solar system are clearly more developed than us. Perhaps in order for their technology to reach such heights they have moved beyond the need to clothe themselves? Our hang-ups on appearance could be interpreted in this view as holding us back; a societal restriction on our progression.
Another contradicting view could be that while they have developed spaceships far superior to our own, they are lacking our rich culture. Scientifically aliens might have progressed beyond us, but as a society they do not have our values, heritage, and artistic leanings. Isn't one of our greatest distinctions from animals not the ability to use tools, but our ability to make and appreciate art? The way we dress ourselves can be seen as an expression of our creative sides and our appreciation of aesthetics...

Outfit details: dress- vintage, bag- Urban Outfitters, shoes- Urban Outfitters, ring- giftThis dress is one of my favorite vintage gems although I don't wear it that often; the peach color and 60s shape is a little out of my comfort zone.
On the subject of older things (not really...) the last time I lived in Washington State was for a few years when I was in junior high. Then, like now, my family liked to visit various natural wonders, such as the Olympic rainforest (near Forks from the Twilight books...). It had been ten years since I last visited, but I found the same massive tree stump that I climbed up with a sister and a dog in tow. I repeated the experience minus the sister and with a different canine...

Hmm, those are some interesting musings on aliens. Oh, and I love the swiss dots on your dress!
My theory - if you can call it that - is that Aliens (as they are portrayed) are all brain and mind, with no soul or heart...therefore no creativity. Fashion comes from the soul!
PS those two :stump: photos are amazing!
what a stunnig vintage dress (knew it had to be)
and thecute polka dots close up
oh interesting point you bring up ..why are aliens always portrayed with lack of culture as we know it ?
my bf would surely adore you nerd that he is lol
i love the sleeves on this dress! A thought: maybe their science is their culture. Maybe it is their form of self expression.
aw those pictures from when you were little/now are so cute! That's pretty cool how things like that stay the same while we change and move around. Its nice - it adds some stability. Anyway, what I wanted to say was - there's a rainforest in the US??
Huh, you know, all these sci fi shows and illustrations of aliens I've seen and I've never once wondered why they didn't have clothes on. You've raised such an interesting question. :-)
oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh I love that last picture!! That tree is absolutely amazing, and it's so cool to recreate moments from your childhood. as for the alien thing...that's an interesting thought. I think aliens are more technologically superior - but other than that they're usually rather primitive - no clothes, no apparant culture and always wanting to take over the world...
Now i'm not afraid of aliens anymore, and that's super awesome sea shell ring
Firstly, is that your backyard?! I'm am envious, if so. Secondly, that peachy colour looks divine on you. Lastly, I have also often wondered why aliens are portrayed as naked...
oh, and I lovelovelove the picture reenactment.
That's very thoughtful. True, I either think of Aliens as being just in their skin or with some tight fitting body suit that is like a space requirement. Now I really want to see aliens in couture dresses and richly colored fabrics. That would truly be a very interesting photo shoot/ collection of clothes. I like how you paired the seashell necklace with the seashell ring, a very nice beachy theme. That stump is wonderful! Just the place to read a book, but which one is you in the first picture?
That tree is awesome. Someday I'll visit that tree, and I'll go to forks to! maybe I'll found my own Edward (yeah sure! xD)
Ok, I have a theory for why aliens are always naked. My theory is " they dont have nothing to hide, like us.
you're so right whit the artistics habilities stuff,I had not thought of that, is very true.
Im a science fiction geek to :)
Fun little musing about the aliens! And interesting timing, right at this moment I am watching the trailer for district 9, hehe. I guess in order to evolve that much SOMETHING has to give? It theory, at least?
Things I love about this post:
1. your quirky question and intelligent arguments for possible answers. I would never thought of such a random thing! But you have valid points..
2. Your vintage dress, its tres cute!
3. The fact that you mentioned Twilight. That (sadly enough!) makes me very very happy. :)
4. The "then-and-now" photos on that mahoosive tree stump. Amazing!
I'd also love for you to do the 'Sparkles and Crumbs Satorial Sharing' (its a tag) which i recently did - would love to know your answers :)

Those NOW and THEN photos are magical! Wait, I think the tree is magical. Our trees don't grow that big here.
that is soooo effing cute! i LOVE trees. your dress also rocks, i love the detail with the dots and your jewelry is divine :) you should wear it more often, it looks super cute on you!
i love your cute dress.. and you look cute as well. so super extreme CUTE!! i love the look!
xx
+10 points for the Olympic Peninsula and "real" trees. You know, the ones that stay green all year.
That younger you and older you photo collage is precious!
Cute dress and I totally love this post... :)
XoXo
adore the the then and now pics! so beautiful to have that!
That dress is just divine. You should deside that it is your comfort zone because I would love to see what else you could do with it.
(and the rainforest is in the Olymics, not Olympia. Olympia and Forks are really far away from eachother, actually. Not trying to be a stickler for geography, but.. well, okay, I am.)
I love the color of your bag! And that vintage dress is perfectly sweet.
that is such a cute pic of you guys with the dog! Me and my sister have a picture like that--we unwittingly had our picture taken in one of the red cars at disneyland 10 years after we'd had the same picture taken that we found later. Crazy!
your thoughts on aliens are very interesting. If i ever write a sci fi novel or make a scifi movie the aliens will be well dressed and have come to earth to take louvre back with them.
gorgeous dress i love the dots and color. the picture of you hiding in the grass is adorable

I Love those tree stumps! I am back in Seattle and I totally need to get out there with Luka.
I like the peach dress it's cute. I am often to chicken to play with color as we Polish have a tendency to wear "gaudy" rather than trendy.
I love the fact that your dress and the corn have the same colour.
these pics are so cool. great shots, esp the tree stumps one, I love it.
Very interesting thoughts on aliens. I'd never thought of that, really.
And what a lovely outfit! The shape of the dress is just wonderful and I love the colors!
~ Caitie
haha nice commentary on scifi, good point. personally I think its likely sexism
love the faded quality of the current photos, but I am always amazed at how you wear things in so many ways. you're so talented! :)
I must visit that park, its gorgeous. one of the things I loved about Seattle
You raise some interesting questions about aliens. I think that fact that they are aked in most movies also really helps to emphasize how different they are from humans.
That stump is amazingly cool!
Crazy in love with your vintage peach dress!
And how did it feel to be revisiting that tree stump 10 years on?
I think clothing is a purely human invention because we have shame whereas the kinds of aliens capable of extragalactic travel have necessarily overcome such petty illogical emotions. Or maybe the aliens we see are all in uniform because they are like their society's equivilent to NASA astronauts but meanwhile back home all the fashionable aliens are dressing to the nines in whatever they want. Or we could go all biblical and say clothing developed after Adam and Eve became sentient and covered themselves with leaves, so the fashion we see to this day is just a remnant of original sin. Hahaha, I love that you think about these things too :~)
i love these photos and your dress! such a cool picture with the tree! i love your jewelery also!

That tree stump is awesome! Good thoughts on aliens - as soon as I read your first couple of sentences I was thinking, "They're too advanced for clothing!" :)
I love those photos from now and then! What a cool tree!
I have often thought about what aliens would think of us. Like, what would they think about women having colorful nails? Would they be confused at why we have so many colors? And what about people who dye their hair crazy colors or who have mohawks? Aliens are never depicted as having this kind of personal expression. Odd.
well i am afraid i have no answer on the aliens theory! In general the infinite of the universe has caused me some serious issues!:-D
Great dress!I work in an office full of male colleagues and I think it is exactly what I need!I am very disappointed that there are no thrift stores near my area in Italy!
Ha I have no idea about the aliens, that thought has never crossed my mind before. However, now I will not be able to think of anything else the next time I see a naked alien in a movie!
Love that dress and that photo of you crouched among the long grass! How sweet you managed to find that tree stump (it is huge after all)Awesome photo.
so so pretty! your pics are always so fantastic! :o)
i love your dress very 60!
What an amusing post, I loved it! Although I have seen many dressed aliens in movies/cartoons, it is true most of the time they're in the nude :)
LOVE swiss dot dress!
xx
Interesting thoughts on aliens.. I 've never really thought to well into the whole scenario..
Gorgeous photos and dress.

Haha that is actually a question I have pondered before! I think it is the case in film because of the 'Hollywood ideal'. It makes us feel better about ourselves and humanity. Aliens are presented as scientific, cold and calculating. They invariably come to Earth to start war or experiment, usually having wrecked their own planet.
They usually do not understand love or have a concept of individuality. None of the aliens, if there are a number of them from the same species, look individual, they all look the same. And they never show traces of emotion.
That is countered by the hero/heroine of the story who is driven by emotion and love, with some sort of flaw they have to overcome along the way, all those things that we like to think make us as humans unique and better than the aliens. With regards to fashion, well art can only really exist where there is emotion and expression, which the aliens obviously can't have if they are to be the bad guys.
I am loving your dress, those texturised dots are wonderful. And your necklace is lovely :)
Agree on the aliens. Strange they don't wear clothing, but even more odd is that they have no genitalia? :)
I love your vintage dress! Amazing fabric and the tree stump photograph is lovely. You should try to recreate with your sister one day and submit to colorwars... !♥

Cute, I love the picture where you're hiding in the grass.
And the peach dress is lovely.
You know what? I believe aliens exist. And they wear Thierry Mugler and bob their hair a la Wintour. I pray I never encounter them; they would vaporize my wardrobe.
On another note, I love your peachy vintage dress; it is difficult to pull off, but you do it well. And your before-and-after photos are precious. You've so captured the whimsy and enchantment of rediscovering childhood haunts.
Wow, what an awesome side by side of you then and now, I just love how much you've changed and how the stump hasn't changed one bit! I hope you go back in another ten years for another photo...
You're too cute. The colors of your outfit blend so beautifully together.
aliens rule (nice ones). i was going to say yellow is a very nice color on you because the dress looks yellow in those photos, but since it's not, i'll just say that part of the spectrum looks good on you.
That is a very interesting train of thought, and a good question! And that peach dress is lovely. And that tree stump is beyond words.
I like your analysis, makes much sense to me. I guess that they may be scientifically advanced, we are culturally and artistically fulfilled. Love the dress and that pic of you on the tree stump is beautiful.
xo

Have you driven all the way up to the end of that road in the mountains where you can look down upon the Hoh River Valley? I wish I could remember the name of it--so long ago. I believe it is on the eastern side of the peninsula. I believe it's the most beautiful place in the most beautiful place on earth (the PNW.) Y'all should go up there if you're not afraid of heights!
Interesting thoughts! And I would tend to agree that, presuming aliens do exist in the stereotypical fashion that we've created for them (superior intelligence, lacking emotion, etc) that our clothing would be seen as an advancement in lieu of building super awesome space ships!
I looked it up, and I think the place I am remembering is called Hurricane Ridge. I've been all over the PNW and that is my most striking memory of natural beauty. And that's taking into account Crater Lake and many other gorgeous places!
Ah, so much to ponder. I've noticed that aliens are often portrayed naked, but never gave much more to the thought. Your advancement and cultural theories seem plausible.
Get out, a necklace to match your ring?! I don't see any details for it, did you make it? When I was little I had a small seashell I was desperate to make a necklace with, but could never find the right way to make it work. I wonder if I still have it tucked away somewhere...
That tree stump is incredible. Before reading your entry I was actually looking up flights to Washington State for later in the year. Stuff like this really increases my intensity to visit the Pacific North West :)
I always thought that aliens were mostly portrayed naked, but then I started watching Doctor Who (the British show about a time-traveling alien), and realized that the two biggest enemies The Doctor has are the Dalek and the Cybermen. In the case of the Dalek, they are basically lumps of flesh encased in a powerful metal structured, conditioned only to "Exterminate!", and the cybermen (I guess they are not really aliens, though...) are human brains, stripped of any emotion, and placed inside a metal body. In both, individuality is nonexistent, and the uniformity makes them better killing machines. So in this case, it's not so much that they are advanced, just that they are only living to serve one purpose. Did I go off on a tangent?
Absolutely gorgeous dress! And you've accessorized it perfectly.
i never thought about that . hahaha . then we have to be proud because we have a better fashion taste than aliens xD love your dress !
humans made aliens genderless so they have nothing to hide. unless aliens are fashionable, why wear clothes?
yeah they are usually naked....thats a good way to think of it... make you apprciate fashion more...
i like the outfits

Vi from Cali
I love the colours in the photos, it reminds me of a 1970s almost famous type scene.
xx
That's a really interesting thought. It definitely hadn't occured to me before. I would definitely think that they don't have as developed a culture as we do. That seems to be how we define ourselves as human, after all...
I love the color of that dress so much! I don't think I've ever worn a color like that. And, wow, that field is gorgeous. It's so summer-y.
Maybe aliens have clothes that are invisible for our eyes...they don't want to share their fashion knowledge :)
I love those last 2 shots. Interesting to see how much things change and others remain the same :)
Interesting thoughts on the alien. I guess they have no shame, so they don't cover their bodies!
Very cute dress. I love the color and texture.
I love Sci-fi geeky stuff! :-)
Maybe, in some cases, aliens are portrayed so 'spiritually advanced', that they see clothes or adornments as too 'materialistic'... In other cases, it may be possible that they are so comfortable with their own bodies that they don't need to cover it up... Anyway, I'd be interesting to see or read about a 'fashionista' alien, hehe. :-)
BTW, isn't Queen Amidala, technically speaking, an alien? She sure has quite a large wardrobe.. Hahaha
Love this post and your vintage 60s dress! :-)
I love your thoughts on aliens, hehe. I am just definately glad that humans wear clothes, not only is it fun and creative... but I think it would be quite traumatising if we all didn't, haha. Beautiful series of photos, I see your wearing your new shell ring! It looks great =].
I have never thought about why Aliens often don't wear clothes in movies, but what you wrote sounds quite logical!
The dress is wonderful!
how on earth are your photos so gorgeous?
I especially love the ring
Your new layout is sooooo pretty. I love the header too.
that peach dress is so gorgeous!
That forest seems amazing!! your thought on aliens are funny hehe that is wierd actually...why are they always naked??
I have a great giveaway going on take a look ;)
loved to read your alien musings :)
the dress is lovely, and it matches the setting you're in. also I am loving your pictures even more, I think your getting more and more delightful.
oh and the pictures in the tree stump are so cute, love to see the time difference in you though the forest seems the same (also I'd love to visit the Olympic Peninsula :) )
owh wow.i've visited your blog and still. you amuse me with your super nice photos and awesome outfit..! gonna linked you . and the alien, err, poor them, they don't know how interesting clothes are, i guess? hahaha. just random funny thought.
anw, ow that tree is awesome!!! great..!
Yes, you're right! Aren't even a bunch of Star Wars Aliens naked? not all of them though.
That peachy dress is so pretty :)
Ohh I adore visiting places like that! Nature really does create wonders that can never be matched by man-made things...
Your shell ring is beautiful.
That stump is unbelievably huge! I wish I could climb it as well.
i like your theory and Wanderlusting's theory. i think the aliens in Mars Attacks wore something.
Yes, it is quite odd that aliens are unclothes when they are supposed to be "smarter" than us. When, in our culture being clothes is linked to being knowledgeable.
I love your fabulous photos! You look so wonderful, content and summery! Thank you for sharing!
Happy Friday!
Clare
such a cute dress, i think i need to go thrifting this weekend! have a lovely one, xx.
This is a really nice dress - and I love the color of the bag, too.
I was thinking about this just the other day, so this is very...odd. Perhaps it is to distinguish them from ourselves subconciously: Clothes - human, naked - inhuman. A lack of detail seems entwined with the conventional portrayal, sleek, metallic, clean. I suppose a lack of earth suggests this...also fabric as humans no it doesn't work without gravity :)
How cutee. You found the old tree stump. That's ONE big tree stump.
Love the dress on you. & the color is so lovely against that field.
stunning dress, it had to be vintage!
I think the thing with aliens and clothes is that they are soooo super advanced technologically that they have no need for such ephemera as clothes. They let the technology be an expression of their artistic selves.
Interesting post! I agree with what Wanderlusting up there said. Also maybe if more women wrote science fiction there would be more clothing :P
And I love love the yellow dress!
wow your last pics are amazing XD
love these outfit, you look so vintage!
Love the colour combination in this outfit! Also, the texture on your dress is really interesting and makes it fit a more casual look.
love that dress!!!
@Anonymous, I have heard of Hurricane Ridge, but I haven't visited it (yet)...will try to go sometime.
OMG I was just about to comment about how the forest looks like the ones from Twilight and then I read the paragraph above it.
i LOVE the colour of your dress, it's gorgeous!! and also this post made me laugh, what a great question! you're right, aliens always seem to be quite cold and clinical, i guess it dehumanises them
I adore your dress!
Awesome, TCH, maybe we will see a photo shoot from up there--would be outstanding! And, obviously you are not afraid of heights--silly me--clambering up on stumps and more. It is *I* that is afraid of heights--the truth comes out--so maybe the Midwest is a better place for me! LOVE--YOUR--BLOG!!!
loving the swiss dot dress - it's so pretty and soft!
how did you ever get the dog up there? fabulous dress, great color.
<3
Great work recreating that photo!! i would say yes, they are advanced, scientific minded only and therefore do not wear clothing. I would be sad to not have that creativity to ut forward each day.
Great remix and that is an epic stump!
i adore your outfit! it's so fresh and airy and the pop of your blue nails finish it off beautifully
That color looks wonderful on you.
I think that is the problem with portrayals of aliens, and why we call them alien.
We believe our dominant culture/civilzation of the universe, and therefore it is impossible for other entities residing in it to possibly have the insight and appreciation of art and culture and heritage. It makes us somehow superior to other beings, even though they have surpassed us in terms of science and technology.
However, I think it is a wrong projection to think that beings so advanced in science have no inclination or ability to appreciate art. Since they are a figment of our imagination, I think it is a stifled imagination that would create "aliens" which do not have a culture or heritage of their own. They should have one. Heightened intelligence should always include a connection to some spiritual realm beyond that of perception. Why else would they want to come to earth and make a connection?
On another note: they are okay to be portrayed naked because none of them have any visible private parts. If they have no need of excretion, or to procreate physically, there is no taboo in being unclothed.
I that you're a geek.
I meant to say, "I like that you're a geek."
In fact, I love it.
hah, just the other day i was wondering if that tree was growing off the stump. I have a picture on that stump as well but from the other side and i couldn't quiet make out if the tree was growing from it.
And those waterfalls are amazing.
that's awsome!!!!!
