Exceptions To The Rule

As a general rule of thumb, I don't like pink. To be completely honest I worry that we are brainwashed to associate pink with femininity and I hate how marketers seem to assume that turning an item pink makes it appeal to a female audience (energy drink, cell phones, etc). That said, there are a few lovely exceptions to every rule.
Exception number one: Audrey Hepburn's pink cocktail dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's. This is by far my favorite outfit in that entire film.
Exception number two: The stunning (and brief) scene in Marie Antoinette where Kirsten Dunst has delicately pink hair. This might be the most perfect shade of hair ever.
Exception number three: Dogwood trees; they're one of my favorite spring flowers.

Exception number four: Over-the-top monochromatic, garishly pink outfits from the runway. Like these Givenchy Couture from Fall 2008.

I have learned to like pink over the years. that Breakfast a Tiffany's dress had a lot to do with it truthfully!

I'm getting a DVF pink dress in the mail at some point - it's gonna be interesting because it's not the subdued pink that I normally favour (not that I have a pink obsession :P)

Funny you mention Kirsten's hair in MA, it is a glorious shade but you know I wish was a hair colour? The wig Natalie Portman rocks (strips?) in Closer...man, how cool would it be to have that hair colour...it's like blonde but better!!!

i've learned to love pink precisely because these strong associations give a lot of room for pink outfits to be subversive, just like in your givenchy examples! those are amazing. that and pink is super cheerful, i love it when boys wear pink :P

i love that quote from 'The sound of music': this lemonade is not too sweet, not too sour, but too pink!

Audrey Hepburn looks good in anything she wears. :\

Love the pink hair, especially with the flower band

Aww I'm so sorry to hear you don't like pink!! I love it haha. These are some of the exact reasons why I love it!

Aw! That's a shame, pink is probably my favorite color. (Mostly due to the fact that it compliments my skin tone more than anything...) But I can definitely see what you mean in its relation to femininity.

Ohhh I love the Marie Antoinette wig, it was so striking yet flattering.
I rejected pink for a while too but in the past few years I've been wearing quite a lot of it.
The colour I just can't wrap my head around is mauve. It has to do with the fact that my mom kept buying me mauve clothes at some point (that I obviously wouldn't wear).
Mauve on blonde girls, I don't know why, I just find it so cliche, even worse than pink.

i love the pink cocktail dress from BF@T's (how'd you like that abrev?). It's one of the most overlooked outfits, but its so adorable! and we have a dogwood outside my house, but it has white flowers, not pink.

That pink hair is the best ever. I don't think it work without the lovely floral headpiece. I love all the fringe on the Givenchy looks as well.

Those are good pinks! I like pink actually but in my own clothing somewhere between thirteen and fifeteen I got overdose of it and since then have quit it.

when i was younger, i read in a text book that in some countries, pink is considered a color of strength and character and energy. So when I see a man in pink, it looks more manly to me than any other color. Weird, huh?

Pink is my favorite colour. ad yes, It doesn't have to be girly girly!

i also have a love/hate relationship with the colour pink. mainly for the same reasons that you do not like it - i hate the "gender-role-marketing" aspects aswell. especially when it comes to primarily "manly" objects like electronics. hey come on, we are not that simple.

I don't own much pink either really, but I have a bright pink clutch bag that is probably my favourite bag! Not really a fan of the pink hair though. I mean it looks good on Kirsten Dunst, but it always reminds me of old ladies. x

Quite a few (beautiful) exceptions there ;) There's always room for expansion...I know, as I never liked pink either! But now...if the right one comes along...love it! :)

I always felt the same way...particulary loathing pastel or baby pink.
But now I love very bright pinks, especially mixing different hues together (orangish-pink with purplish-pink, etc.) in the same outfit.

Marketers are a scourge, for sure! The pink/blue associations used to be reversed, I believe, with blue for girls, and pink for boys! I fancy that we stole it from them for its fierceness ^^

(Blue is my favourite colour, but pink is pretty keen!)

Pink tights are splendid. Always.

Great uses of pink! I obviously don't feel the same about it (seeing how my blog is predominately pink), and I will admit to owning a pink cell phone... hahaha! I don't like it to be a girly thing, though - I just enjoy some shades of the color. Dogwoods are best!

come and embrace the colour pink! :)

Audrey's cocktail dress is superb.

I agree with you for I have never liked to color pink much. But I must say those exceptions are quite lovely!

i LOVE flowering dogwood trees! we have a few of them on campus and they are so pretty! it's like HELLO SPRING! every time they bloom.

i'm so glad you got your package! i'm sorry i couldnt make it fancier, but i really just wanted you to get your goods in time!

Yes, now that you mention it, you aren't one for pink. It would look great on you though.... I'm sure if I could remember an outfit.... off to wardrobe remix.

I think I love everything that Audrey has ever worn, but that pink dress is stunning. I always find when watching the movie that I wish there was a better shot of it!

im not gonna lie - i do love pink. for a non-pink lover, you greated such a perfect post for the color - audrey, marie - need i say more?

I happen to be one of those girls who fall for anything that is pink. A pink hammer? I want it. A pink alarm clock (even though I already have one)? Give me. I bought a pink hair dryer once just because it was pink. It broke three months later and you know what? I exchanged it for the same one. Just because it was pink. That one broke soon after and I learned my lesson. Sort of. I have very little pink in my wardrobe, but I still crave it. I believe it is the 7 year old in me.

wow! i love audrey hepburn so much! and she looks absolutely great on that outfit! :D

your blog's great, dear.

Oh, I love EVERYTHING pink -- I have a ton of stuff I bought simply because it was pink! Strangely, even though it's my favorite color, I never wear it... hmm...

Anyways, I love the color's excessively feminine implication. Plus pink and black are always a fantastic combo!

I think I might watch Breakfast at Tiffany's right now, haha.

That hair color is a dream and all, I just don't think Kirsten Dunst rocked it all that well, she looks kinda like an elf IMO at least

Annie said...

the givenchy outfits are perfection! you posted awhile ago about someone rocking hot pink, and I think pink is best done in an over-the-top, as-ungirly-as-possible way.

I used to be obssessed with pink! I still think it's cute when I see some pink accessories like camera or a cell phone. I remembered that Kirsten Dunst's hair color when I watched the movie and it was the coolest hair ever! xxxoxoxo

completely forgot about marie antoinette in that scene. i loved everything about that movie.

a big yes to the monochromatic pink a la Givenchy Couture. I agree, there's something about this color that makes it tricky.

I like dusty pinks. Audrey's outfit is so cute!

I love pink, but I hate pink clothes! In my opinion pink looks good only in very chic dresses like the ones you present here and maybe jumpsuites.

Denise said...

i love pink!

why not? i think you'll look so pretty in them. hihi

Brittany Noel said...

Yes, these are all really good exceptions to the rule. Especially the dogwoods. There was a dogwood at the house I grew up in. They are so beautiful.

pink is definitely having a come back in my mind! can't get enough of the stuff despite never liking it!

Kirsten's Dunst hair in that movie made me want to go pink-blond for a moment until my hairdresser convinced me to go redhead instead :))

Although I absolutely adore pink, dear, I absolutely agree with you, when it comes to marketers and their "pink intentions"...

Breakfast at tiffany's is my all time favorite movie! the fashion is amazing, and the pink dress is one of my favorites!

Yeah pink can be fun! I like the over the top pink like the runway pictures, it's like reclaiming pink and kicking it's ass while making it sexy. Too amazing!

I feel better now. I thought something was wrong with me because, as a Mom, I was offended by Google's totally pink header on Mother's Day. Pink has become a CLICHE. Thanks for the stereotype, Google, but no thanks. No one has brought this up, so leave it to Anonymous to broach the subject: breast cancer awareness ribbons. Why are they pink? I know they had to be some color, but evidently someone decided that vapid pink was the go to color for all women. So what would I choose instead? Good question, maybe a rich, courageous, dark red. I don't know. Just not BARBIE PINK! ARG!!!!!!!
