The rich fabrics and exaggerated shapes are exactly what I imagine a young, hip Queen Elizabeth I wearing (if she was alive today). The whole collection was very romantic and luxurious.

Ironically, I find the Dolce and Gabbana Spring 2008 collection a little more young and modern. I still have visions of wearing brocade skirts and paint-splattered tees...

Life In Technicolor.
and btw, I"M THE FIRST!!! WOOT.
I love finding connections between art and fashion. I was looking at an illuminated manuscript in Art History, and I thought "oh my god! the tights the Duke are wearing are just like the American Apparel two tone tights!" You know, the one where one legs is a color, and the other leg is another color.
I was very amused :]
beautiful
so decadent - i am in love!
I love D&G collection. Those brocade skirts are so beautifully made and perfect for dressing up. xxoxoxoxoxo
I love the old theme of that collection. You're totally right, it does look like the painting.
Oh,I see what you mean! Love the shape of the skirts
oh, the 2008 collection is arty arty arty!
but then the 2009 collection is historic chic!
take care
I like the Spring collection more too! Even though I found the FW collection very baroque, I never thought of Queen Elizabeth! Good call ;)
xx
I love the shapes and textures.
loved these collections. Dolce and Gabbana have really grown on me lately! Elizabethan style is so awesome.
Got to love a bit of history... I went to the National Portrait Gallery while home in London over christmas, and was immensely inspired by all the Tudor portraits. Such rich colours and amazing detailing... Brocade is slowly growing on me!
Thanks for the lovely comment. After your sweet response to costume wench-ness, I'm going to do a few posts concerning past productions I have photos of this week interspersed with the latest photoshoot. Woop! :-D It's so exciting to be revisiting them all!

oo i love this comparison, i've never thought of d&g 09 as elizabethan but you're totally right!
these are beautiful! good eye on spotting the comparison. i don't have the eye for stuff like this. the pieces are so pretty!
Yeah, I'm definitely seeing the Elizabethan inspiration. I love how polished the D&G collection is. It seems like it happens relatively often that the big, main line puts out collections that are more young than the spin-off lines. I wonder why that is.
I loveee both collections! the Elizabethan influence is well noted hehe =)
i love that 08 show SOO much, that was one of the best best best seasons ever for me. so art inspired and exactly the lcothes i want. i adore that brocade skirt.
i could picture that too.
and maybe those splatter- paint tees could be a DIY..
That picture of Queen Liz was my header for a while, haha! I really like both collections but I prefer the 2nd.
Now that you mention it, I can definitely see the Elizabethan reference. Well spotted.
*gasps and falls off chair in excitement* That is my dream collection! It it positively AMAZING! Words cannot describe.
I love queeny's bows in that portrait!
I need to take another look at dg. These are great!

I do love that yellow and green brocade skirt. The 09 collection looks fun as well. I imagine if any celeb was caught wearing those on the red carpet people wouldn't really "get" it, but I think they are unique and interesting.
I think I'm gonna be in WA as well this summer figuring out my future in the "real world," as they call it. Yikes!
Oh I like the link to Queen Elizabeth I and you're right, she would totally wear these with a big wide ruff!
I absolutely love the mental image of Queen Elizabeth I wearing D & G!
I usually don't like runway fashions but I must say I adore this collection.
I really like the outfit with the burgundy top.
Those big, puffy miniskirts!! I love them, but I bet they're hard to sit in.
Some of the clothes look lovely, but some are just weird!
i'm not sure that shape is all that nice for my figure, but i love it on the models!
ooh, love the shape of those bell skirts! i would LOVE one of them!
hey! thanks, i appreciate it! and I'll have to go there. I never noticed zara on 5th...I'm so silly! My e-mail is allmyown389@hotmail.com
d&g was amazing this year, i really loved all the brocade and detailed jackets. so dedadent and royal.
Oh my god I want ALL OF THOSE PLEASE.
Fantastic in every way! My boyfriends always do me proud!
oh how I wish I could have just one of those brocade skirts...
kind of like it.

I do too! The loose fitting paint splattered tees are so "un-dolce gabbana" that I couldn't help but like it. I guess they have returned to their corset comfort zone.
first i love the color,....yellow. hihi or gold, any jewel toned color and am into full balloon short skits. i love this post of yours.
Their collection is amazing! Kinda Luella-ish... Quite unexpected of them really.
this is fantastic! i particularly like the purple and blue ensemble from the dolce & gabbana collection!
i've wanted a brocade skirt for ages. i'm hoping to be blessed by thrift store gods one of these days. how cool would it be with some ridiculous vintage rock n' roll tee? yumyum
I love the volume in the skirts!
LoL, my cat did look just like Gollum in the movies when he was a baby...
Gorgeous. Those exaggerated, bulbous shoulders are proving to be as iconic to this D&G season as guipure lace was to Prada.
oh! it's called Elizabethan! i'm quite confused whether to call it renaissance or anything else.. the patterns on the skirt, and the waist skirts.. gorgeous!
I love that cream brocade dress. I think it's interesting-- a lot of other designers are doing "Depression chic" but D+G went waaay in the other direction.
agree. Love the structure and the shape. Royalty but coolness especially the last pics.
I agree. And a nice selection of photos!
Ooooh, I love these. I love the painted tee and the skirts from fall. Gorgeous! I bet it'd be really easy to duplicate something like that!
wow - forever21 is far too accomodating for weird fashion looks: http://www.forever21.com/product.asp?catalog_name=FOREVER21&category_name=btms_skirts&product_id=2055345525&Page=3
yaa they are alike!!
nice post

I swear I write this in comment to almost every one of your post, but it's because it's sooo true. Your sentence construction is GENIUS. This time, I adored 'The D&G Fall 2009 collection reminded me of two things: Dolce and Gabbana Spring 2008 and the Elizabethan era'. How the hell do you do it??
OMG, I have not looked at DG collection in such a long time. I used to love their clothes.
love love love this post!

I love this post! I don't think I would have made the connection on my own, but now ahh! It is so perfect!
Classic, to say the least! x
