Blow Me Up

Some people have an unusual passion for cupcakes and previously I did not understand this addiction. However, I recently came to realize that I am similarly attached to balloons. There's just something very cheerful and silly about balloons that make them a joy to see and hold.
Milla of The Girl Who Married a Bear used a balloon to send a message of love and push the cuteness factor of an outfit shot to another level.
The king of irreverent art, Jeff Koons has drawn inspiration from balloons for his massive sculptures. His pieces are a delightful play in shape and gloss.
While balloons are usually viewed as cheerful and celebratory, Chrissie White has brought out some of their darker potential through her photographs. Her pictures harness the poignant sight of a solitary balloon or the bitterness of balloons at an unwelcome birthday party...Definitely, check out the rest of this young photographer's work that is both conceptual and beautiful.

Love the Jeff Koons sculptures. I just love all things kitschy so thats balloons included! They just remind me of being a kid and It's always sad to see a child lose their balloon.

There was a Jeff Koons exhibit at Versailles when I went and a couple of his balloon sculptures were there. So whimsical, but at the same time a little at odds with the whole vibe of Versailles, I thought.

That last balloon reminds me of these recent Durex commercials that have been circulating around. Have you seen them?

Frankly, I dislike Jeff Koons.
He is this generations Andy Warhol without the style and attitude.

Those photos are interesting and beautiful, but I have a serious balloon phobia! I hate the sound of balloons popping. I hate blowing them up because I'm scared they'll blow up in my face. So you can have my share. = )

It's strange: I've always been attracted to balloons, and I've never known why. My old college friend and I once had a discussion on this very subject. Initially, I thought it was because they were/are cheerful and silly. However, after reading this post, and seeing the brooding balloons out of their customary celebratory context (something I've never witnessed, except for in Koons' clever work), my mind has changed about what balloons can represent. I think I just like the way they look, whether it's fun or foreboding.

(R, it's funny that you paid me such a nice commenting compliment; I read the last one I wrote, and though I did read the whole post, and I do genuinely care about you, your life, and your blog, I don't think my comment was incredibly inspired. But I'll take the compliment. Thank you.

Your blog is one of the first five or so I started reading. It's always been an inspiration to me, and not just for the outfits. The subject matter, the photography and the personal insights and revelations make your blog special.

Watching you go on your higher education and international adventures has been a really great experience for me. I get to live vicariously through you, seeing the world and academics through your eyes. It's a great narrative.

The posts always warrant reading from start to finish. )

First off, Koons is brilliant. His balloon for me is the only one looking at in the Thanksgiving day parade. I can totally understand the love of balloos. When we are kids we are handed a balloon out of joy and we always remember that. There is a great seen in Funny Face where Audrey is told to hold the balloons and Fred is going to take her photo and she let's go of them. Great scene.

I love Jeff Koons' work! I saw his exhibit on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum over the summer, and it was so amazing to see the giant balloon animals in person. I will be sure to check out more of thpse balloon photos by Chrissie White.

I love balloons too! I love tying them around my wrist and walking around like a (very old) kid :)

The Jeff Koons exhibition at Versailles palace (outside Paris) was incredible, and featured the balloons above.
