You Made Me Love You

Some of my style icons aren't icons for their personal style, but rather costumes and characters they assumed while on screen. A prime example of this is Judy Garland. Honestly, her off-screen persona holds little interest to me, but who is not still captivated by the sparkly, red shoes she wore as Dorothy?
While she stood at only 4'11" she was a powerhouse for her voice and dancing. Perhaps, there is no better showcase for her talent (nor more appropriate film for the season), than "Meet Me in St. Louis." This also happens to be a family favorite in our household.

wow. I never thought of having a character be a style icon, but you are completely right!

I had no idea she was so tiny.

Interesting way of approaching style icons! I think Alexis Bledel is to me what Judy Garland is to you: I like her style as Rory on Gilmore Girls and as Lena in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants much more than what she wears in real life.

I perfectly understand; created characters are absolutely free of bonds, so they are way more interesting (often) in personality and style!

Meet me in St. Louis is the movie they mentioned in SATC? Is it getting better in Greece? I hope so

You're right! Dorothy is darling, even more so now that I know she's 4'11.

I just saw "MMISL" for the first time about a week ago. It was great.

I had no idea she was that tiny! She was so beautiful in her films, I adore the Wizard of Oz. I don't think I've seen Meet Me In St. Louis before, I must see if I can hunt it down :D

"Clang, Clang, Clang"

of course I love Dorothy too but you can't go wrong with Meet me in St. Louie - I mean come on, "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is my absolute favorite Christmas tune.

I think it's really neat that you use fictional characters as style icons. Personally I tend to think of fictional character as role models. I have on occasion gone, "Oh, Buffy would have totally done this."

"Meet Me in St. Louis" is my favorite movie! I must have seen it over a 100 times literally, and I never get sick of it! I especially love some of the dresses Rose wears.

I love the Wizard of Oz. I have a pair of red shoes and everytime I wear them I think of this film.

Judy Garland doesn't seem that short! It's hard to imagine that I'm nearly a foot taller than her!

On a tangent: Do you associate "The Wizard of Oz" with Christmas? Today I was listening to my Il Divo Christmas CD and one of the songs on the album is "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". I thought it strange but perhaps I'm the only one, given the fact that you posted this so close to Christmas. Hmm . . .

I really want to see Meet Me in St. Louis. I might try and rent it today actually.

Love The Wizard of Oz...I wrote a dissertation on it...I know pretty everything about the movie(s), books, etc.! Love the Judy's version even if she looks kind of freaky as Dorothy, who should be meant to be a 8/10 years old girl...!

she's amazing!

can u believe that I watch this movie this year for the first time?

Judy was only 4'11"? Wow, you learn something new every day. At exactly 5 feet tall I'm always interested to learn of glamorous and talented women who managed to rock an outfit without the extra inches. :)

Oz is my favourite film of all time.

Oh my gosh! Cath and I grew up watching Wizard of Oz and Meet Me in St. Louis- we were absolutely in love with Judy and all of her characters. When we first watched Meet Me, we tried to emulate her gorgeous straight hair and puffy bangs- to deflated results. Love it!
