You Know Never To Trust A Person In A Mask...

Athens might be a dearth as far as thrift and vintage shops are concerned (if you know better, please point me in the correct direction), however near the fruit market we frequent we stumbled across what was promised to us as "the best flea market in Athens." Through ancient doors crammed with oddities and up a spiraling decrepit staircase to a sprawling floor packed with curiosities we wander. Each enameled and detailed chest holds the potential of surprises that might yet be undiscovered. Every broken camera might once have been wielded by expert fingers and their subjects as varied and ravishing as storybook heroines. A sense of wonder and adventure is always present in these places...

To transition from that place and into a costume for the evening is as smooth and yet as magical as selkie slipping free of her seal skin. Boldness embues a masked person, their anonymity making them free to be whomever they want and frequently who they want to be changes in the blink of an eye. Unpredictable and uncharacteristic; I danced in the center of a room while others stood still.

That reminds me of a flea market near my house, the one where I got the $50 Jill Stuart dress. Great mask! Forgive me if I'm being a dunce, but I'm not quite sure exactly what you where dressed up as, no offense. Whatever it is (a cat?) I love it!

Congrats on finding the sweet flea market! My town lacks in the vintage department as well... the anything neat department, really :).

My boyfriend and I saw this huge sign for a farmers market in town. We got up early, went down to the site, and there were literally 5 stands, none of which had fruits or vegetables :-/.

You look so chic and enigmatic in your Halloween outfit.

Yes, i do know better, jeje [:)]: although it has been a looong tine since i do not live anymore in athens, you try these vint-2nd hand stores:
1. Amerikaniki Agora (=american market).Going down the sofokleous street towards Athinas street, turn left in Athinas street, walk a couple of mins until you see sth like a little church(yes),then turn left in the "stoa/στοά"(=i think you call it "lodge",which means the entrance, in this case the entrance to the building that is in the left of the littl church). In the second floor, or third, you have the intage store you need.

2. In the same street from which you were going heading to Athinas Street, well in Solwnos(i do not remember the number but it is on the blovk before you turn left to Athinas street)you will also find a second hand clothes market, also called "Amerikaniki agora"(they import from USA,that's why they have the same name). It is also in a "Stoa", in your left hand, you have to climb up to a stair that leads you in an old Athenas house, with tones of clothes!(honestly, i got there 600kilos of clothes for the Trash In Fashiob festival that i organised for 300euros, what left from the festival i gave it to the homeless, with the help of the Major of Athens.Just an extra info because you do not get short answers with me!)It is just beside the "Kreatagora"(=meat market).

3. In Kallidromeiou street -in Eksarxeia- (again i do not remember the number, how could i?!) you have "Yesterday's bread" with 2nd hand from Holland mainly. It is in your left hand, after you turn in Kallidromeiou from Ippokrati street, or to your right hand if you turn to Kallidromeiou from Stournari street. It is a small store with rather expensive stuff(10-20euros)for its small variety.

4. In the neighboorhood of Pagkrati, in Frunis street (there is a bus/trollei station just across the street:if you catch trollei No2 or 11 it is the second one in Frunis, the same goes for the bus No 209 if i am not wring), you have a rather peuliar second hand store but for that it is kinda my favourite one:they have second hand clothes for the not priviliged;that is their public is poor inmigrants that cannot afford new and expensive ones from Zara;how would they know that there are people that prefer second hand clothes?!It is on a basement on your left hand.It is rather big but eatch time there is only one piece that worths the while. You should check my photos with clothes from that store if i wasn't bored enough to put them in internet!o well...

That's all for now!
Enjoy Athens!
cheers from bcn!!

Hah! I see you did get the old Lookbook account back up!

I was a cat for halloween (at the first party I was at last weekend), and I made my ears out of little buns too. Creativity reigns when you don't want to spend money for a costume. My tail was one leg of a pair of tights... haha!

lopi said...

So well-written. You really made my mind drift away while reading your words. I imagined you had lots of fun while wearing your fabulous costume!
Good luck with the vintage hunting in Athens. I hope you will find kioki_dina's advice helpful, but the problem deeper: Greek people don't have a "second hand" mentality. I did a post about this back in April:

Pain it is not to have access to good vintage and thrift stores. Perth has too many rich people and that kind stores don't exist here...(not that much anyway)
