Meteora and Me

These pictures were taken in Meteora at the stone formations and monasteries there. I can hardly do the area or it's history justice, so if you want to know more I suggest you just research it!
Instead, I would like to talk about the difference my "style" has made here. I'm in a large group of over 30 students and I came knowing no one. We are all American and only a few schools are represented and it is very easy to get lost in the crowd. With my devotion to skirts and ballet flats I stand out a bit amongst the sea of blue jeans and flip flops--and I am learning I stand out in a good way. Already, a number of times different students have come up to me and said they wanted to get to know me, because they could tell something of my personality from my clothes! It's so flattering and sweet to hear, but it really affirms what I believe about clothes being a form of self-expression and extension of yourself. When you dress in a conscious manner people will notice this and it gives them some insight into who you are before you even open your mouth.

I really never thought that my personal style would make me more approachable or help make new friends, but it is a nice realization.

What an awesome compliment. You really affirm that style isn't just about clothing or fashion. The scenery looks so gorgeous as well.

what kind of camera do you own?
the images are simply beauuuutiful.

and i do agree with clothes being a form of self-expression and most of the time when i see girls who dress according to the trend, theyre more and more like clones of the models in fashion magazines... and usually, they turn out to be very boring...

but yeah! im glad your having a wonderful time. keep taking more photographs.. im going to be constantly taking pictures left and right while im at iowa..

That's what I believe, too. Clothes can say a lot of things, it's a matter of what you want them to say about you!

That is so true! I think people get carried away with an obsession with fashion sometimes (me included) they kind of lose the plot of what it boils down to: self expression. Lovely pictures!

I went to Greece when I was about 11 so I don't remember much but I do remember how amazing Meteora was. I'd go back just for that.

Just so you know, I'd probably come up to you and start a conversation because of your great outfits too :)

With your wondrous style it is easy to make friends and influence people...but seriously, if I saw you in a concert, or a cafe, I'd definitely think you were someone who'd I'd want to meet.

Lisa said...

i couldn't agree with you more.
clothes express who we are on the outside, as no matter who we meet and when its always from afar...and we automatically as humans take a look at the outer appearance and make a judgement, weather is be good or bad. we make one.

so what we wear puts us out into the world. Then our personality + inner self takes over. its like a cake. the frosting on the outside, then you hit the many layers inside...

keep on rocking your beautiful skirts + flats. I'm sure you will make some incredible- life-long friends...

lovies.

It can be unfortunate that people do judge others by their appearance, without getting to know them. But it is a fact of life because in the end without knowing someone we don't have anything else to go on. And you're so so right, when clothes are an expression of self and of creativity it's actually a really positive thing, and people respond positively to that! I would definitely want to get to know you based on your style, I love your blog too by the way!

These photos are so beautiful. I totally agree that clothing as a form of self expression really gives people an insight into who you are as a person. I'd be enchanted by your outfits in real life too :D

Wow the area looks amazing!
I know a lot of people think fashion is a way of expressing themselves, but for me it's just a way of feeling good about myself. I doubt my outfits say a lot about me!

i think you would definitely stand out in a group of regular college students. this probs sounds terrible, but i'm pretty sure some of my professors have remembered me before just because i make a conscious effort to look nice for class. what nice compliments!

i emailed your address you have listed in your profile about your study abroad program, fyi!

Well, your style is so sweet and lovely who wouldn't want to talk to you? Great pictures!

The "conversation piece" element is my favorite aspect of fashion.

I also like to stand out a little bit. And it's easier to make contacts this way.

I've been in Meteora too, three years ago. It's simply breathtaking! Good for you that you aren't limiting yourself to Athens and you are getting to know as much as possible of Greece.
As for Athens Fashion Week, I just put up a post with all the related information about I could get my hands on, so check out my blog and feel free to ask anything more you might want to know.

What gorgeous scenery. I'm glad you're making new friends, and I definitely agree about clothes speaking for you before you even open your mouth. Last Friday a stranger stopped me on the street to say that she "f***ing loved" my Kitson sneakers. (I think she may have been drunk, which would explain the expletive. :P)

I have to agree with them. The way you dress and act (well in the pictures) makes you look warm and lovely person.

Wow stunning photos, what a view!
And oh yes, a lot of people don't realize it, but it's true we all get impressions from the way people dress, so it's important to dress in a way that you feel represents you and sends the message that you want to other people. And it's true that, even though perhaps it's a bit judgemental, sometimes I'll decide whether I'd like to get to know or make friends with some, or not, based on how they're dressed. ;)

Thanks for your sweet comment by the way! :)

It's wonderful that you're getting positive feedback on your style of dress/self-expression. I'm happy for you.

Maybe it'll be inspirational enough to get some others out of their jeans and flipflops!

Shen-Shen said...

I couldn't agree more - style is the first thing someone sees about you, so why not show the world a bit of who you are?

I can't wait to get out of my high school, where people are far too concerned with being just a part of the crowd...

You know what? I actually have gotten those a couple of times lately, espessially after I started blogging, cause now I dress up every day. I'm glad you are getting friends with your great look, now lets hope your personalitity stand up to your styl (I personally think it does). I'm glad you found internett in Greece, as an art student we kind of been trough alot f that area. Look forward to see more.

Ooooh, and your My Little Pony Post inspired me to do fun fun things. Stay put!

Wonderful pictures. I'm so envious. Your clothes definitely do make you seem approachable.

A lot of times, when people dress generically, in blue jeans and flip flops, they either dont know what their style is or have no appreciation for having one. I live on the beach so my style is usually limited to boardshorts, bikini and flip flops, but I try to change it up every now and then because I just dont want to look like everyone else. Then again, its also about how you carry yourself. If you have an open heart and an good attitude, you could wear a trash bag and still be approachable. =)

wow that looks so cool i would love to go there!

Beautiful scenery! Wow. I've always wanted to approach people because of the way they dress, but I feel a bit intimidated and shy so I don't do it =(

gorgeous photographs!
it looks so pretty there.

that's kind of funny...i never used to care about fashion, till recently, and i actually had a negative view of girls who always dressed up. i thought they were trying to get attention and obsessed with themselves...and now i'm one of them, and i realize there's simply a joy in loving what you wear, but i'm always self-conscious, hoping other people don't look down on me. it's nice to know a lot of people don't.

What absolutely beautiful pics!
I agree about clothes being an expression, and it's particularly important when knowing knows 'you', the inside you. It must be so lovely to hear that from them, too!

melly said...

Yeah the way you present yourself really makes people either want to be like you, allows them to know that you share similarities or flat out, not on the same frequency.

kathrynsky said...

meteora is gorgeous - i was there too!
and, i hope you don´t understood it in the wrong way... but the europeans you saw in greece or somewhere else... the girls... the most of them have ballerinas and look like you, or? ;-)
hihi...
have a nice trip... i love greece! :-)

Maeko said...

Your photos are so epic.

And it is true, something of your personality imbues itself in your personal style, after all, who you are dictates your style...

The opposite of approachability in style can also be said...Some people can be completely off putting based on what they wear.

Luckily for you, you are completely charming.
