While I have an inspiration folder on my computer (our age's scrapbooking) full of outfits to look at, I usually take a sense from each of them, rather than a copy. I save looks I like and capture the spirit with my own clothes, whether it is wonderfully mixed prints, or a sense of proportion and layering, it's about using someone else's outfit to create my own. It's very rare I just want to copy something from head-to-toe...this McQ by McQueen outfit is an exception. If I could just afford to I would buy the dress and sequin (!) leggings in an instant. Unfortunately, I can not, so instead I'm curious about re-creating it for myself.
I love Grecian draping (have forever basically), but it is so hard to find good draped pieces at affordable prices. If anyone knows where a dress like this is at, feel free to share...

P.S. Wouldn't it look brilliant with a DIY bodychain like Lulu's layered on top?

I love my inspiration folder it is amazing. it just makes me want to play dress up!
wonderful! oh, and i love grecian draping too !! makes you feel like a goddess ;)
Maybe you could try with a "Chameleon Dress" (see here: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=15095069 ) I have one and I just adore it...it can be draped in every thinkable manner...you can make a replica of loads of designer dresses buying only one. It was a good investment, definitely!
Oh yes, that is gorgeous. I don't really have any advice for you on recreating it though. Good luck!
That deep red colour is absolutely lovely.
it's gorgeous! actually, i don't think it's that hard making one. on of my friends made one once, and it became wonderful.
ps: i just wonder, could we link?
I'm with you on this one, it's a great look, head-to-toe. I bet you could find some slick leggings at AA, but I wouldn't have any idea where to find the jersey piece.
it's very savvy. i love it. let us know if you find it.... : )
I love those sequined leggings.
Draping always seems to look so flattering too!
I love how perfectly scaly the leggings are and how the dress is almost see-through, but still tasteful. The draping is lovely.
I'd like to know where to buy a similar affordable piece as well. I'm not a big fan of the leggings, but grecian draping always get me.
I've always had a bit of a thing for grecian, but I'm with you. Where can I get this for cheap!?
And AHH OH MY GOD THE BODY CHAIN. I WANT TO DIY ONE SO BAD.
Oh, very cool! Almost looks like you could attempt to DIY with the dress! I'm imagining a silken sari-type piece, and then making a sort of cummerbund in matching material to cinch it high.
oh it would look fantastic with a chain over it! So totally. And I have been craving sequin leggings since I saw them in an editorial in Teen Vogue on Gema Ward... so fantastic!
that mcqueen outfit is sooooo perfect! i nearly died when i saw it on his site.
oo wow grecian and leather leggings, that is a striking combo!

I think sequined leggings are another one of those things that don't work well with people whose inner thighs touch. Can you imagine that sound as you walk??
Daggum toothpick women... ruining my fun.
Stunning, and I can completely see you wearing it :P
Aaah, the body chain would indeed out the elegant ensemble on to a whole edgier level! And wow, the sequin leggings!
you do so well not copying, and more getting the feel of it. Envy
I love this McQueen dress, the detail and draping is magnificent (and I can't go past sequinned tights!)
Oh man don't even start with me and grecian drape. Summer is coming up here in Australia and it's all I can think about... must some gladiators now that I think about it.
I'm a HUGE fan of drapeing too! In fact, my last post was on it (and I have another 2-3 on it). I even have drapey shorts and pants!
The 'relatively affordable' drapey dresses I've found recently are: Rachel Roy, and the recent BCBG collection (which I'll be hanging out for), Kirrily Johnston occasionally does great drapey pieces too. LOVE your blog (wish I could take pics like yours)!
unfortunately I don't know of a good source. I would expect something like this to crop up at F21 or HM sometime soon. Here's something similar which I love: http://www.twobirdsbridesmaid.com/
I actually don't think that this would be too terribly difficult to diy something like it... if you google one seam convertible dress there is directions on how to do a drapey dress like this, then you could make it with sheerer fabric than the standard jersey for those convertible dresses.
Re: the sequins, Alice+Olivia has black sequin leggings I think on shopbop for around $300. I saw another website which had a pair for $70 au, but they might be sold out. called something like butterflyxx
I love it! I've always been a fan of the Grecian look, but sequined leggings just makes it that much better.
A body chain is a brilliant idea. You should be a stylist for McQueen!
oh my i love drapping.
this summer i got to see some true masters drape. it was AMAZING. such a talent.
i could see you in McQueen. how lovely.
xx.
the drapping is great and the color is just lovely.
I love this look as well. Sure some people might be able to get the whole gear from Mqueen but I wouldn't have a clue where to go and find a shiny wine colour leggings like those. mmm tough one this.
the dress is amazing. and the shiny leggings. I like!!!!
The dress is lovely but it's those leggings that have really got me sold! Be still, my beating heart. I love your body chain idea, but I think I'd go with a gold rather than a silver: I just love gold and cranberry together! Don't like these earrings, though - a little too much, I think.
The dress is very special and the latex leggings a cool break.
I've the same problem as you!I've been looking a dress like that for ages! they are all too expensive...
I still have a scrapbook! I have this book where I cut out pictures from magazines and glue them inside! But i "use" it in the same way that you use your inspiration folder.
I think your nails are cool.
Would you like to exchange links? :)
I have to say I am fond of a bit of draping too!
That McQueen is incredible . . . you could probably find something drape-y at Forever 21 and accessorize it to be fabulous!
xoxox,
CC
the dress is amazing, as are the sequin leggings!
love that colour too. i agree, the entire outfit is to die for
sequin leggings shouldn't be too hard - you can get something similar at least from AA.
i'm sure you're approximation of the outfit will be different but just as amazing.
