Smile Like You Mean It

I very often have people tell me I should smile more. Not just in my pictures but it tends to be a bone of contention between me and family members (“how do we know you’re having fun, you look miserable?” “…this moment isn’t so fun.”). I'm just in general am not a smiley person. Oh, don’t get me wrong I do smile and laugh—a lot. It’s just I like to have a reason to smile, if I’m just walking somewhere or don’t find something amusing, my face goes into “neutral” (or scowl, if you must) mode.
However, I am making a greater attempt to smile in my pictures. I think part of the situation is that the other day I realized I wasn’t so uncomfortable in front of the camera anymore! You see, I’m really not the ham this site might lead you to believe. No one in my family really is. We hardly have any family photographs. On facebook I have less pictures of myself than all of my friends. I’m forever covering off my face when friends attempt to snap a picture or making ridiculous faces (so that if I do end up looking goofy it is clearly intentional!).
Yet, the other day I posed and it wasn’t so awkward. I still felt like a ham and slightly silly, but I was fine with that. So here’s a smile from me…or at least a smirk.smile, style, fashion, personal, theclotheshorse, the clothes horse, knit, pencil, skirt, American, Apparel, classic, secondhandsmile, style, fashion, personal, theclotheshorse, the clothes horse, knit, pencil, skirt, American, Apparel, classic, secondhandsmile, style, fashion, personal, theclotheshorse, the clothes horse, knit, pencil, skirt, American, Apparel, classic, secondhandsmile, style, fashion, personal, theclotheshorse, the clothes horse, knit, pencil, skirt, American, Apparel, classic, secondhand

You look so cute in the third picture :).

You look lovely in those pics!
I smile and laugh a lot but on pictures, I think when I smile too much I look kind of silly so I don't smile that much when I am posing...

I wholeheartedly agree - plus there's nothing worse than a fake smile in a photo, particularly when you've had a rubbish day and have little to smile about. Lovely belt by the way :)

Fake smiles are terribly cheesy and so obvious to spot as so often the mouth may be grinning but the eyes are not. I am ashamed to say I often pull out the cheesy wide grin but a picture is so much nicer when it's a genuine smile.

Love the belt

I'm the same way with smiles so I won't tell you to smile more often even though you look so beautiful when you smile!

great gold belt and I adore your glasses!

I do tototally get what you mean. My natural "default face" is one of moodiness and of being miserable 24/7. Some people don't approach me because they think Im stuck up and snobbish! But then we start talking they're amazed I know how to smile and laugh.

a kiss!!!

People tell me to smile less. If we posed for a photo together, we'd cancel each other out.

Ha! You really remind me of my 21-year-old self in many respects. I used to get the "you should smile more" thing or people just getting up in my face and yelling "SMILE!" I was way more up in my head then, too, so it wasn't a scowl, just the look of someone not totally externally engaged. Whatever. A good response to these people is just, "It's okay." Because it is, and it's not about them anyway! PS-- sweet sea urchin ring!

You look great, love your belt!

I love your smirk/smile. Cute outfit, cute smile :D

When I'm not smiling my face goes into "bitch face".. I think my default face just looks mean, or so I'm told, haha.

Great outfit! Love your shoes and belt! Smiling is hard-I totally understand, in my head I always look better when I am not unless someone catches me in a candid shot!

I know what you mean! I had a reader comment that I always have my head down and I realised that it's because I'm really shy in front of the camera. It's bizarre. You have a lovely smile and we'd all love to see it more often!

Aw, you have a lovely, lovely smile! I love this whole outfit, especially that beautiful belt.

I like smiles, but one thing I don't like are fake smiles! So I agree with you when you say smile like you mean it.

People always tell me that I look angry, pissed or just sour. Well, sometimes I am, but mostly I'm not! i just don't like to smile if I'm not really glad!

I think its difficult to smile just for smiling sake when nothing funny is happening. Having say that, you look adorable with the smile/smirk :)

that belt is gorgeous!

I hardly smile, in pictures, and maybe in real life too. My mother and I are the same-- people always ask us if we are angry! It's only that our default face apparently looks pissed off.

That said, I really hate when people tell me to smile. It bothers me, irrationally, when a stranger walks by and says 'Smile!' or something to that effect. I just hate it. I wonder if it's the contrary child within me!

Your smirk is delightful :D

your hair looks beautiful beautiful! and you look lovely when you smile =D i know what you mean though, i always feel like a twat smiling at my camera and self-timer. or, do you have a resident photographer?

That purple is SUCH a pretty shade. It looks great with the gold belt. I really like this outfit! :3

Smiles are essential! They release endorphins, are contagious... whenever I find myself in 'neutral' mode I consciously look around and find something which makes me smile.

I love smiling at kids or random people and making them smile, sounds creeepy I know :S

i love your hair and i love that gold knot belt. gold and purple - one of my favorite colour combinations!

enc said...

You're more beautiful and self-assured as the months go by.

Purple and green, very, very nice. Also, that haircut is really doing things for you.

It's hard to smile on command. I don't think people who order us to 'SMILE!' realize that that's exactly what they're trying to get us to do.

Gorgeous outfit.

I usually look sulky or upset when really i'm just shy and self-conscious

Stephanie said...

I am EXACTLY the same! You'd think having to take so many outfit pictures would make me more comfortable but I can't stand having my picture taken by other people unless I'm scowling or making a stupid face..

kajsa- www.aenigma.blogg.se said...

Oh no noooo. I can only see the pic of your belt. Witch sure is cool but I would love to see your smile too! :) Now that it is my first time on your blog it would be even more fun to se it whrn it is what I first read about so to say.
