Revisiting the Sixties

I've never been such a fan of the 60's mod style. I'm not sure why; maybe it is the bright, almost garish, hard prints, maybe it is the fact the shift shape does nothing for my figure, or maybe it is the choice of synthetic materials that was commonly done. Whatever the reason, while I occasionally admire the images (I don't even care for most of the films made in this period...), I just never really like the style. It's slightly ironic because I would probably get along a lot better with the "typical" woman of the 60s than her repressed 50's sister who I tend to dress like...theclotheshorse, the, clothes, horse, vintage, photoshoot, secondhand, retro, sixties, 60s, mod, dress, heels, fashion, style, daily, outfit, ribbon, bow, detailtheclotheshorse, the, clothes, horse, vintage, photoshoot, secondhand, retro, sixties, 60s, mod, dress, heels, fashion, style, daily, outfit, ribbon, bow, detail

Point being, this is the gorgeous shift dress I just got this weekend from the antique store. It actually looks very nice on me and even I am reluctant to belt (though like a true addict I inevitably will at some point). When I was purchasing it the older man at the counter kept pointing out how I could lengthen the hem. It took me a moment to realize, but what he meant was, it looked too short for me! It was marked "little girls," but I have a good eye for telling if things will fit (I couldn't try it on, no dressing room). I'd like to share with everyone that it does have a shorter hem, but it is passes fingertip length, so it would pass those obnoxious rules many schools enforce.

I was too weary to go outside for the pictures, so these are shot from my bed. There's also a small closeup of my eyeliner, since I wing it nearly every day but no one can really tell. I wing it less boldly in the summer; hot weather calls for lighter make up, right?theclotheshorse, the, clothes, horse, vintage, photoshoot, secondhand, retro, sixties, 60s, mod, dress, heels, fashion, style, daily, outfit, ribbon, bow, detailtheclotheshorse, the, clothes, horse, vintage, photoshoot, secondhand, retro, sixties, 60s, mod, dress, heels, fashion, style, daily, outfit, ribbon, bow, detailtheclotheshorse, the, clothes, horse, vintage, photoshoot, secondhand, retro, sixties, 60s, mod, dress, heels, fashion, style, daily, outfit, ribbon, bow, detailtheclotheshorse, the, clothes, horse, vintage, photoshoot, secondhand, retro, sixties, 60s, mod, dress, heels, fashion, style, daily, outfit, ribbon, bow, detail

I'm not so keen on the '60s prints either, and I feel the high-street has kind of killed them too.
I love the eye makeup though.

Love the sea-urchin-esque ring you're wearing, I've seen a few like that on Etsy but have never gone so far as to purchase. It looks really great on!

infatuated with your shoes!

Love the 60's pics - I have to admit I am a fan of the 60's, but never actually wear anything in the style of the decade.

I love your ring; it goes beautifully with this outfit.

I am in love with the 60s style. It is just so... crazy. You look wonderful, and the colour of that dress goes so well with your hair and skin.

Oh it's unusual to see you with that kind of make up - but it suits you so well.

Ooh, a different style of photos for your different style of outfit.
The cross-legged one looks cool.
I actually love 60s style but theose cute mini shifts just make me look like a big dumpy mess. I find it hard to ignore figure-flattery issues, but I'm sure if I find a piece I really love I could brave it.

i love 60's styles, so i very much love what you're wearing here. the oversized ring, the eyeliner and the bow are all just the perfect touch!

i just love 60's makeup, the way there's a line curving in the eye crease and wekk as along the lashes, you should try it, its more subtle than one would thing. and that dress is just lovely, i said ages ago i wanted it to be a 60's summer but still have yet to find a nice dress is good enough condition, yours is gorgeous

Oh, this is so cute; your dress I mean. I once found a dress very similar to this at a thrift shop. I bought it but after trying it on at home, I wasn't impressed with the shape of the dress. It was very 60s, as you mentioned. Long story short, I gave it away... & now I regret I did. I didn't like it then, but I most certainly wish I had it now.

I've never been a fan of 60s mod either. For me, it can look a bit too harsh, all the way down to the makeup. I prefer soft silhouettes & neutral colors; very earthy. I think the only part of 60s garb I like is the hippie movement. I am more inspired by that. =]

I love all of the yellow that you've been wearing. I don't think I've ever even owned anything yellow, but it looks quite nice on you. The dress is gorgeous (especially with the shoes) and I love the pictures.

I can't say I adore the 60's style but like the bright yellow vintage dress. I just adore sunny yellow, this color makes me feel happy.

That yellow is such a beautiful color on you! And I love your Nine West heels...

i do a slightly winged eye as my everyday makeup too!

"it passes fingertip length, so it would pass those obnoxious rules many schools enforce."

Ah, that brings memories of strict Catholic school rules. Not that I ever really wear short skirts anyways, unless coupled with tights.

I actually do love the geometric sixties' style - I like the bold, primary colors and the basic shapes. Unfortunately, seeing as I have hips and a bust, shift dresses have the undesirable effect of making me look pregnant or like a tent.

Oh, as for the comment that you left on my blog ages ago (sorry, I'm terrible at updating things) - central Pennsylvania doesn't count as the East Coast. We like to call it Penntucky. :P

That dress looks great on you! I'm a belt addict too and I'm sure you won't be able to resist cinching it at the waist for long!

Ohhhh, this is so cute! I do my eyeliner the same way, too. I really like Coco Rocha's eyes for the Chanel ad. She looks fantastic in them.

I'm not a fan of the prints.

That dress is adorable! I love how you added your own demure touch with the bow, and your hair looks great.

I love the full sleeves and the high neck. I'm a tiny but tall girl and so I often end up buying kids clothes because they fit better. Let's just say I've had to lengthen a few hems in my time.

Jimena said...

oh, I'm such a sucker for kids clothes. Seriosuly. Some of the best coats and skirts can be found there.

I really like how yellow looks on you. Its quite a hard colour to wear, but you look great on it.

I'm not sure about the sixties mod dresses in general either. Movies on the other hand... I do love Godard and the rest of the Nouvelle Vague filmmakers. And Antonioni's Blow Up, which is probably the quintessential sixties movie.

Cheyenne said...

Aw i love to see you wear heels! Their adorable on you (other than recently i dont usually notice you wearing them)

I personally prefer mod to some of the other looks from the 60's. Regardless, I love this dress and think you look lovely. And your makeup looks great too!

Although I'm a big fan of 20's and 80's style, I think the styles of the 60's are the best of all!

I love the 60s stuff but tend to wear more boho. You like great in these photos though!

what a great color! I love those shoes too; they seem to work with anything. I did some bold liquid eyeliner yesterday and found it a successful venture.

I love the 60's, 60's are my fav. decade. But I hate almost every fashion editorial done on "who to get the 60's swinging London" look, from Danish Magazines. They never seem to get hold on the "important" things.

Miss White said...

I really like the bold graphic shapes and prints of the sixties, it's not something I'd really choose to wear though.

Your dress looks amazing against the grey!

Penny said...

That dress is GORGEOUS, especially with the bow on the neck. The shoes really give it a mod edge too. What a find!

I like prints, but really depends which prints...
Won't you be hot using this as a summer dress, with the high neck?
