Adventures In Thrifting

I'd like to begin by thanking everyone for their kind words yesterday. It seems many of you feel similarly to me on this subject. To expand slightly on the subject it's all about prioritizing your interests and your funds. You can have a ton of money and spend most of it on entertainment and traveling or you can have limited resources by put your wardrobe above other wants. Further, the price of items doesn't matter, what does is finding pieces of value (rather intangible value--things that you value, have history, etc).
While we are on the subject of frugality, I went on a little thrift shop excursion yesterday. Yes, this is a slight hitch in my shopping ban (War and Peace is steadily coming along...), but since it was so little and in cash, I couldn't really resist.
I tried on this pink vintage dress with lace caplet which appealed to my romantic sensibilities of the moment. However, it seemed very impractical and I did not purchase. Also passed up due to flaws in fit was this denim halter dress with embroidered details.
I couldn't resist this dramatic yellow maxi dress. You see, in high school I was obsessed with the idea of having a neon yellow prom dress, however I was completely unable to find one. I intend to shorten it to knee length to make it more wearable for every day. I also purchased the black dress, although it is a little large, since I have been desiring more black and has nice lace details/texture. I intend to style it with a belts (as I do everything).
This is what I wore to the thrift shop. I snapped all of my pictures in thrift shop dressing room, so the space was limited and I didn't get any full length shots. The bag was customized by me.
Outfit details: shirt- Banana Republic Outlet, skirt- Urban Outfitters, shoes- H&M, bag- secondhand, necklace- various sources

Awww! I love the pink dress, but I understand the impracticality! I am so glad you bought the yellow dress! It's lovely.

hehe the pink dress reminds me of something from "a streetcar named desire" very blanche dubois
-shame the denim dress was flawed, it's so cute and cowgirl
-love the yellow maxi, the shade of yellow looks exactly like banana taffy, haha odd observation yes, but i really love banana taffy hehe
- i also love your green skirt you wore, very 40s, and the owl necklace, i have an owl obsession :)

i just honestly love your outfits, it seems odd to be complimenting you on them specifically at this post because truthfully you inspire me daily and subconciously actually. i now wear belts more, enjoys classic silouhettes, have expanded my dress collection, and layer more thoughtfully so thanks!

The pink dress is so romantically ridiculous I almost can't stand it! I'm very excited to see how you wear the yellow on once it's altered, it's lovely and simple. Your necklace layering is also great :D

the pink dress, is lovely! - I would seriously have bought it right away!. - I properly wouldn't even bother to try it on! - which I do a little to often!

I really like the bag. it's great. and work so well with the outfit!

Gorgeous finds, dear. A shame that you didn't pick the pinkt one though. It's eye candy at its best... But I understand your concern.

i really love your bag too! fab pattern.

Great finds, and good for you for only buying the best choices! There will always be more, believe me. And that bag is fabbo!

Did you see I tagged you? Then I remembered that you were reading War&Peace for the time being (in combination with an ongoing shopping ban) - so maybe you can skip the tag, or do it, anyways!

The yellow dress is certainly a good buy, I really like the color, and the simple cut. Maybe play around with its length, first though. I hear that maxi is "in" right now ^^

Love those dresses on you. Even in a dressing room your photos are so cute <3

Ouh, the pink dress is cute but I understand you not purchasing it.. I LOVE the yellow dress.. I saw one at BCBG the other day and I needed it but didnt buy it.. haha it was way to expensive. I think yours will look so nice shortened, I can't wait to see it finished!
And the black dress is cute, you said there's lace on it? Sounds very nice.. can't see it though but I understand, changing room = maybe not best place for a photoshoot =]
Wow, this is a long comment, sorry! but I adore your bag and all your necklesses!

Hey girl, come on back over to FF (Fashion Frenzy). I have a question for you on the Kimora Lee post. :)

I love the yellow dress - it'll look great when knee length and the neckline is lovely. No worries RE yesterday's comment. You're not alone! I find discussing personal finance absolutely abhorrent (unless with my very close friends). I never ask (or tell others) about salary details. It is inappropriate to the estreme. It just made me a little sad to see you explain yourself about not going out for dinner etc. I hope you're feeling a little better today anyway :)

The pink vintage dress is a dream. I love your style and reading your blog, I was wondering if you would want to exchange links?

you just can't buy style like yours, or fabulous mix of garments like yours.
so all those who splash their cash most probably can't find such a unique and stylish way to dress... unlike yourself!.... who seems to be able to make everything look great!

i love that yellow maxi! maybe you should wear it a few times with the length too.... looks great.
and rather refreshing!

i love the yellow dress and the purse!

I love the yellow and pink dress, and am feeling the black mood as well. People always assume I spend a ton of money on my clothes as well, and the truth is my average piece of clothing probably cost $3. You always manage to look great on a dime.

I love the yellow dress! so grecian and elegant

You find the cutest stuff. Why are your pictures so grainy?

Nay'Chelle said...

Amazing job on the skirt!

I really like the maxi dress. In regard to the black dress, it seems like I've been wearing my (only) dress with belts lately too.

Beautiful dresses, and I like the outfit you wore while thrifting. Haha I'm sticking to my shopping ban, so I'll have to shop vicariously through your posts.

That purse is exquisite. It just hit me that you can alter your clothes at your leisure. I am so jealous of that superhuman power. I only get to work with what I got. Lol how many times do ppl tell you that you look fab? Do you get tired of it or is the gift that keeps on giving?

Wendy said...

The first dress is so frickin stunning! Not only the frock but the pose and the photograph.

enc said...

Nice job! Too bad the pink dress/capelet wasn't a practical choice.

I've totally done that; taken pictures in dressing rooms. I'm quite jealous; you look splendid in anything. My figure is not quite so forgiving.

I love the yellow dress & all your poses are fab!!!! I wishI cna draw like that on my bag! :/

Amazing yellow dress!!! Stunning. As much as I love clothes and fashion, I prefer spending time and money doing things with my friends, they're what keeps me happy. As lovely as expensive clothes are, they're just things at the end of the day and won't make me as happy as spending an afternoon giggling away at nothing with my friends :)

Anushka said...

how fun is that pink lace concoction? i know what you mean though - it's the kind of thing that you want to own just to have it. But I think you'll have fun playing around with the yellow maxi dress. Don't shorten it too much - it needs to stay dramatic!
as to money. yes, i agree. i find that i either spend lots of clothes (or actually, for me, fabric) and have fun making lots of clothes but don't go out with my friends. or, i go out with my friends a lot, spend money that way, and don't buy new clothes.

the bag is just beautiful and i really liked the pink dress eventhough it seems quite unrational to buy a piece like this.

Sad that denim top didn't fit properly. You look like an adorable pin-up in it.

I completely agree with what you say. I usually get similar comments quite often and it surprises me. A lot of people I know spend a more money than I do in clothes just drinking and going to endless clubs, yet people don't seem to even notice that enough to comment.

Daiane said...

my fave is the yellow dress. can't wait too see how it will look after you will shorten it. also, judging by the photo, i guess the material feels so nice on the skin. am i right? ;)

Lady Melbourne said...

Ah I've been away and as usual I have missed so much on your wonderful blog!
Darling you are just spot on, you simply do not need to spend loads on clothes to look stylish and well put together. I block my ears whenever I hear women say, 'Well, I can't afford to dress like you do.' Or, 'I choose to spend my money on other things,' implying that I perhaps waste my money on clothing. Little do they realise that the majority of my wardobe is vintage/eBay/second hand. It's all the the way you wear it.
And you are one of the finest my dear!
I love that yellow dress, it's gorgeous and lovely for summer. Very envious indeed!

Miss White said...

Interesting pieces, I can't wait to see how you style them!

I agree with you that money cannot buy style, and you illustrate that perfectly.

Awesome pics!
Except the 1st on I'm totally in love..

i'm dying to see how you work the yellow maxi-dress!

and that skirt you wore there looks awesome...have you got any previous outfit shots of it?

your bag matches your tattoos! kinda. i think,
maybe not.

annah said...

well. your bag has similar 'swirls' to your tattoos (:

I love all of the things you tried on. I think if I asked to get a neon yellow prom dress, though, my mother would disown me. She thinks anything more "risqué" than turquoise or lavendar is bad on a prom dress.

Dapper Kid said...

Lovely photographs as usual, the yellow dress is super! And I love the bag, was that all free hand? It looks amazing!!

Katie Rosemary said...

Wow what an easy way to personalise a bag, I'd have assumed you bought it like that!
That first dress is lovely... I can see what you mean about it not being practical but oh it's so lovely.. *sigh*

annabananna said...

love your outfit, that bag looks really special, as if it was bought that way. and that yellow dress is just beautiful, that's a great find.
since i wasn't here yesterday due to my crazy schedule, let me just say that i really felt you while reading your words and totally get the dilemma! have a nice sunday!

Winnie said...

That first one is amazing isn't it? Don't know how practical it is though but it's wonderful all the same.

i seriously love the pink lace one. i can imagine how it feels not to buy something so pretty because it's impractical, that's why i snap photos :)

that black dress is uber-flattering on you! i also tend to lean towards simpler looks and then accessorize with great belts and jewelry.

^Brittney, I don't know if this is a general complaint you have against my photographs or just these ones, but as I stated in the post I took them in a thrift shop dressing room, which isn't known for its lighting.

The yelow dress is adorable on you, and I love the pink one...all that lace...

I found you a dreamy yellow prom dress:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Gorgeous-50s-Yellow-Chiffon-Sequin-Party-Prom-Dress-6-8_W0QQitemZ150268602066QQihZ005QQcategoryZ38566QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em122

Sadly I can't buy it... Too far from my poor budget at the moment, expecially because I don't have a prom to attend soon ;-)
