Uniquely Challenged

In order to curb my impulse shopping and most definitely my online shopping, I am self-imposing a unique shopping ban. My reasons are simple: I need to save money (many thoughts/plans swirling through my head), I don't need more (I just want it really bad), it's silly to keep buying things when I need to think about packing stuff away, and I already am awaiting packages to arrive the mail!
The ban is this: no shopping until I finish reading "War and Peace." Good, eh? Motivation to actually finish the book and kind to my wallet! I checked the book out yesterday and I intend to start today. Wish me luck!
Outfit details: dress- H&M, shoes- Seychelles via Amazon.com, necklaces- various sources
More views of the shoes are per requests.
Note: pictures were taking on the swinging bridge on my campus.

Writing about fashion in my blog helps to keep me from buying more clothes. I am also trying to do some reading. I am reading "shopoholic" right now, and I just purchased the bestseller Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. Even though its for teenagers and I am in my forties, its supposed to be pretty good.

Sounds like a good plan. Especially because I love Tolstoy! I hope you will enjoy War&Peace as much as I did. It took me quite a while, though, so probably you will be under a rather long shopping ban ^^

I'm currently not waiting for anything to arrive in the mail...it's the first time in months! Working and going to the beach everyday is keeping me from more shopping.
By the way, apart the lack of time and money (sigh!) and some moral reasons, I think I need something more than "War & Peace" as a ban for myself...maybe I should try with Proust's complete work ;-)

pimprenelle said...

Ahh a shopping ban, I usually don't manage to keep them for more than 2 weeks. Does it include small accessories?
War and peace might not be that long a shopping ban, 2-3 weeks max.
But at least at the end you'll be richer in culture and money ;)

swinging bridge??! how fun!
wicked shoes :)

Those shoes are relly nice.
I know about the "buying clothes even though you have enough already" issue very well. It's difficult not to buy clothes.

WendyB said...

Good thing you didn't pick Proust. You'd be in rags for the rest of your life.

Natasha said...

I buy too much too...i have way more than I'll ever need, but I can't help picking up new things. :)

War and Peace is a doozy.

I am so fascinated that your campus as a swing bridge!

Good luck with the ban but it's sucha great way to motivate yourself with a good read.

Those shoes are AMAZING. My mother still pays for my shopping, so I'm not feeling any holes in my pockets yet.. So I think I might have to do something clever like this when I go to college, heh.

Is War and Peace long?

I ADORE your shoes btw! :D

^War and Peace is known for being a long and troubling read, the paperback addition is over 1,472 pages.

I love the reading to not shop idea. I should try it out. That dress is gorgeous, doesn't need much to stand out! I wish I had an H&M....and those shoes are crazy!

I also try a shopping ban at the moment :). I just have to much stuff! I wish you good luck!

ahh, good luck! i have imposed a shopping-ban on myself since i got back from new york. i bought a little something yesterday, though, but still think i am holding up quite well since it's been almost a month since new york!
a friend of a friend had the best solution, though - get a job where you have to shop all the time! you get to shop a lot, spending other people's money and get paid for it. plus, you won't have as much time for shopping and may even be satisfied, so you won't end up spending all the money and can actually save up! i am really looking into getting a job like that :)

Beka said...

No shopping until you finish War and Peace??? That would motivate me alright!

Eleh said...

1472 pages? gees. happy reading! at least it will keep your money away from the stores!

Ca said...

That's a good reason to save money and a funny motivation to finish the book.

The shoes are really amazing!

The shoes are great. Good luck with your reading / shopping ban!

haha! that's such a great way to impose a shopping ban. i started Anna Karenina with the highest of intentions on a long, 8-hr train journey in February. I ended up deciding to sleep, listen to music, draw, write, eat my lunch, and read a Margaret Atwood novel - everything I had but finish the Tolstoy. Which is a shame, because I do still want to read it, it's just so difficult to get into, and you have to really really concentrate... :)

headmistress said...

ah, that's a really good idea - one I have to steal! I'm useless at self imposed shopping bans but definitely need one, for the same reasons. Plus I have piles of unread books anyway...

annah said...

that's a good idea! although, i bet you'll read war and peace in about three days. even if it is a huuuuge book!
i love the dress- it looks like a top and skirt.

way to go on the shopping ban! i need to come up with such a clever plan myself, although i've started "100 years of solitude" and am struggling through it, so maybe that will be mine. love the outfit and photos! keep us updated on how you like tolstoy.

Very cute shoes. I find myself having to stretch my money nowadays because of how the economy is going (damn you, gas pump!) but that is a really good incentive to get you to slow down your shopping. Maybe I should do something like that.

The shoes are very special but I just like them on your feet.

Okay, I don't know how much this latest blog is going to help you not to buy anything else. All I can say is that you'd better not LOOK at yourself in that outfit. You look absolutely fabulous, old hollywood, girl. You are working that look, especially in the second picture, and the shoes are beautiful.

Well... I hope you can reach your goal...Oh man, now I want to go shopping...

Fashion's the word said...

"War and Peace" is my all time favorite book. You will completely enjoy it. I also adore your shoes, although your whole outfit is flawless and chic.

Coming from a new and unfamiliar reader, I really love your blog.

that dress fits you perfect! for a while i was obsessed with everything seychelles made, thier shoes are always so unique and comfy.

Your campus looks really pretty! As does your outfit. When I get back to college I must start taking outfit photos near all the trees and streams and stuff. That'll be in February, though, so the place might've lost some of its charm by then...
And you definitely get to reward yourself with some material goods if you finish War & Peace!

Katia said...

Oh, that's such a great trick to break shopping and read creating motivation, sweet =]
I love your outfit, simple yet crazy beautiful, I adoreee your shoes
and your neckless looks cute from here, haha =]

Mmm! Thanks for the heads-up! I will keep my eyes open for it. Maybe it'll pop up on eBay or somewhere (I probably won't get to an H&M any time soon...)

Those shoes are super cool! I think everyone has a problem with internet shopping, it's because you don't handle the money...it's all just entering numbers! Good luck with War and Peace - I tried it once when I was little and have yet to return!

Sinead said...

Oh, good luck with your ban!
War and Peace seems ... interesting?

Gosh, those shoes are to die for, and the skirt is lovely and bright!

Oooh are they the shoes I asked to see side shots of? I don't think so but they're fabulous regardless. They look very comfy. You also look in great shape!

Enjoy 'War and Peace' - I don't think I can read it because it always reminds me of someone I knew who loved it but I will read it someday :)

Good luck! I try the same thing every now and then--usually because of a trip that I can shop on--not nearly as smart as reading a REALLY long REALLY old book! Good for you! Thanks for the comment by-the-by!

I did a shopping ban as an personal experiment on the effects of consumerism--I was able to resist buying anything for three months before I finally gave in to a pair of shoes. Oh, shoes! :)

I'm intrigued by the necklaces, I'd love to see a close-up!

Now that's a clever ban. I tried reading War and Peace years ago and just couldn't do it.

If you find Tolstoy troublesome to read, get another translation. That may make the whole difference!

The shoes are quite delightful...

I am still completely in love with your shoes. Good luck with War and Peace, its quite the behemoth book.

Good idea - I stopped shopping on the high street and for a year only bought 2nd hand/vintage clothing. Was hard but nice to read books instead of go round the shops. Of course you sound like you need to stop shopping altogether and make more remixes wiuth what you've got! Maybe you can 'swap' instead of 'buy'??!

Ana said...

Haha nice motivation. And those shoes are really intriguing.

The Clothes Horse said...

^Julie, I already do buy a lot of secondhand and vintage clothes. The problem is I'm in a VERY low paying job. Proof that I do remix (the only new thing in the photo above are my shoes) can be seen in this post: http://theclothes.blogspot.com/2008/05/repeat-offender.html

^Chelsea, I hear "100 Years of Solitude" is a fantastic book--it's one of my sister's favorites.

Anonymous said...

i'm hoping so! however, i just got a new guitar and so i'm DEFINTELY on a shopping ban for quite the while -- i'll just make "100 years of solitude," AND perhaps "love in the time of cholera" part of the deal. :)

There's an average of one character introduced for every 2 pages in that book.

It is death to keep track of =X I read the wikipedia summary of the major characters and I have to say, it helped a lot. Don't give up on it!

such a great plan,i really need to the same myself.good luck!xx

Excellent plan, Rebecca! I'll be looking out for updates.

Very nice shoes, by the way, and the red skirt is perfect. I love the photos on the bridge.

I love H&M, like the rest of the world. What I don't like about it, is when I look at a blog from a girl on the other side of the atlantic, I see a dress I'v seen in the shops in my little town in Sweden. No critic to you though, only H&M. Although I do understand them, they earn loads. :D But still, it's no fun to go abroad and see people wearing the same stuff as home. :S

Brilliant idea! And incidentally, I too love Gabriel García Márquez. I saw his house in Cartagena, the city which inspired Love in the Time of Cholera (I thoroughly recommend both the book and the city). I'm tempted to imitate as I too need to save some cash! My options would be Salman Rushdie, as I always find his stuff heavy going, or House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I think it will end up being the latter as I've borrowed it from a friend and don't want it sitting on my shelf for months on end. How's War & Peace going anyway? x
