Escaping Mundania

I was thinking today how in many fairy tales or fantasy stories mysterious worlds are hidden in the most innocuous places. A mundane wardrobe of old clothes leads to the magical land of Narnia, on the other side of a looking glass lurks a world of wonder, and even a natural disaster such as a tornado can lead to mysteries beyond our knowing. The message I take from these stories is that even the most ordinary items holds the potential for extraordinary events and creatures—even more reason to enjoy antique stores and old abandoned homes, no? There’s something to be said for appreciating the everyday items around that maybe everyone has, but you haven’t fully explored…
Outfit details: camisole- Anthropologie (years old and bought on a super sale), skirt- secondhand, shoes- Nine West via Amazon.com, belt- secondhand

There is a mysterious beauty in the unexpected, the simple. Items with meaning are so much more interesting than items with "oh-it's-new" aura. Lovely blog you have.

I always love your musings. I often wish for portals to secret worlds, and am loath to resign myself to the fact that maybe they don't exist.. I do believe that ordinary things can be extraordinary though!

Lovely outfit!

Woah, that's so true! I never thought about that!
I'm probobly going to be so paranoid today about like mirors and everything haha but I like it!
And I adore the picture color/qualitie, it makes your skirt so alive and the color's beautiful! I love your neckless too =]

Oh lovely!

I have always been somewhat angry at fairy tales and fantasy stories. Not all of them, but there are so many of them that say if you really, truly believe in magic or whatever it is, you will find the secret garden, the world behind the salt-shaker, the place in the wardrobe. I am always going to be resentful that I was not given a secret and magical world apart from this one! I know, create your own world, all the magic and wonder is around you, and yet I've always felt it was so cruel. If you really believed in faeries, you'd see
them, kind of thing.

I think though, like you've said, the appeal of antique things and old buildings is part of that. Even though I try not to look for it, because if you look for magical worlds you never find them, but I can't help but look as I am very bad at self-restraint!

Longest comment ever! I love the collection of necklaces.

those flowers! so beautiful, and I love the shoes as well. i'll always love fairy tales, but i think that they can be related to in a more pragmatic manner as well (in a response to the previous comment). i remember how sad and alarmed i was when i realised that the idea of seeing fairies and wise women that no-one else could see could simply be interpreted as schizophrenia. and how everything was rewritten to give moral and more often than not christian messages. this is a rant (or essay) for another day but i recently bought and am making my way through "from the beast to the blonde" by marina walker, it's an excellent full of illustrations if you're interested in fairy tales. i'm reccomending it just because i think that you might enjoy it :)

You look so great, I love the skirt and the detail on the top! I love fairytale stories of forgotten lands and a childhood favourite remains The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Amber said...

I love the shell on your necklace. Makes me very glad to be going to the beach soon. And I agree with you that ordinary things hold magic. Isn't that what a book is, something ordinary that holds a different world.

red is my all time favorite, esp. blue red like the Ferrari red. yes, i agree we should definitely stop at times to appreciate all the beautiful beings surrounding our supposed mundane life. even the most mundane being affects another being in ways that is unpredictable.

You have a good eye for layering necklaces. I'm sure if I did this I would look like a Christmas tree! I need to be inspired to wear more jewels because it's such a pretty look.

Blue Floppy Hat said...

As always, you look wonderful- and this outfit is slightly different in its vibe from your usual ones, I can see why you thought of Bardot. And your little owl pendant is adorable :)

I think magic being hidden in the mundane just makes it all that much more exciting- it's like the possibility exists anywhere (even the entrance to Platform 9 and 3/4 and the Hogwarts Express, were hidden behind the perfectly ordinary King's Cross).

Oops, sorry- I got mixed up between two posts ago and now!

I remember trying to walk through the closets as a kid. This resulted in potentially dangerous situations, and an occasional bump on the forehead. My general grouse with life has been a certain lack of fantastical adventures that take me to other dimesnions, or some such thing. I remember my reluctance to believe that fairies don't exist.

I wonder if I will ever find that hidden wonderland, or will have to contend with an occasional glimpse in a clear pond, on a butterfly's wings, or in an eagle's flight.

That necklace just takes my breath away!

Imelda Matt said...

mmm...it's still not going to get me into a thrift store - unless there's a big ol' sign that reads 'rub the magical lantern'! I find the smell (and for some reason it's universal) reminds me of rotting old people...barf!
