Gold Teeth And A Curse For This Town, Were All In My Mouth

I walked to the gym today listening “The Shins” and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. While in Japan last spring I became obsessed with this band. Nearly every day as I walked the hour to school their songs would sing into my head as I absorbed the sights and experiences around me. Listening to them again was like reliving the time I spent in Sapporo, I could close my eyes and feel as if I was there again with all the sights and smells. I strolled again through crowded neighborhoods with laundry blowing in the wind, lingered under the whirling falling petals of cherry blossoms and stole flowers from street side gardens to wear in my hair. I recalled the boy who rode past me on his bicycle, shouting “kawaii” in my face and the schoolchildren who followed me for several blocks but were too shy to say hello. I remembered the backwards traffic, the bike paths, and the street crossings that played music. The garish Pachinko stood at the corner where I turned, the tunnel that they were putting a mosaic in while I was there would be completed now and other things will have changed by now as well. The girls would still ride their bikes in their heels and attach umbrellas to their bars for inclement weather. Some days it’s like I never went and other days it is like I never left.
I shouldn't be allowed in a dressing room alone...
Outfit details: jacket- Urban Outfitters (about 3 years old), dress- Asos, tights- bought at a supermarket, shoes- H&M, bag- Urban Outfitters

For me, it is Camera Obscura in Tokyo. Or Bob Marley for San Francisco. Or that certain song for the first year I dated the bf, and we were lying in the park, doing nothing. I love music, and how it makes something alive again. I have written a post about how I had to cry, when re-listening to the soundtrack of my final school years, because that time was SO good.. It is in German though, but it is nice to know that other people are the same.

On another note, the dress is sugar sweet.

Certain music evokes specific memories of times, places, and people for me. There are some songs I just can't listen to for this reason. But on the other hand, some songs make me feel so happy, I play them over and over.

The butterfly dress is very sweet.

For me, music reminds me of a project I was doing for school or a book I was reading when I first listened to it.

I remember the street crossings in Japan that played music. I had one of those tunes stuck in my head for ages, but now don't remember it at all.

Great dress! I really love that jacket, as well.

The Shins! My boyfriend kinda-semi got me into them, haha. My faves by them are Pink Bullets, Kissing The Lipless, and Australia. It's awesome how songs can take you back places/songs isn't it? Except when they're associated with memories you'd rather not remember! Haha.

I'm not sure if you've already blogged about this, which I think you may have, but when did you go to Japan? What for? (Study abroad I'm thinking?) How was it?! I'm thinking being shouted "kawaii" at must've been pretty rad heheh.

Also, what kinda store has a dressing room that cute?!

And you look adorable, as usual :]

I would love to study abroad just so I could absorb an environment so different than mine, and come home with the wonderful memories like you have. I'm hoping it can still happen!

My bf is dying to go to Japan...How far from Tokyo is Sapporo? I hope that wasn't an ignorant question, I mean if Sapporo is a province or something...

love the dress!

[sapporo is up-north. i took about 8 hours to travel from tokyo to sapporo via the bullet train]

I love both things! Not together, though. The jacket would look better with something underneath that would show more of you neck.

Thanks everyone for the sweet comments.
Anonymous, I do not consider myself a scenester: I am too old, don't live anywhere where there is a scene and I'm more into books than parties.

I feel the same about The Shins, except for me it's France instead of Japan (but only when very rainy).

Love The shins!
I have not bands, but songs for cities and memories.
The "butterflied" outfit is great; I tried (in vain...) to bid for a gorgeous butterflies printed dress on Ebay last week.
