As the seasons change and the weather turns colder, many stylish ladies turn in their ballet flats for Uggs (ugh!). Now I am all about choosing fashion that is practical as well as stylish, by all means pile on the layers and wear shoes you can walk in, carry a bag to fit your books--but there is a limit. I wear sweat pants to the gym (when I go, which is rare) and have never (and will never) don Uggs or Crocs. But I was wondering, where do you all stand? Are you comfort ladies, or anything in the name of fashion? (I must admit I have worn ballet flats and tights in the snow before, and it wasn't that awful or as extreme as my friend who wears flip flops no matter the temperature.)
So, is this lady your style, or are you more about comfort? Or perhaps you take the compromise--stylish boots perhaps?

I prefer comfort. Being warm in the winter is the most important thing, even if it means not to be stylish. But there are some things I would not wear, like uggs for example. I think it's possible to choose a middle way. If you always prefer stylish you will soon be ridiculous like the lady in the picture.
I prefer comfort, too. There are so many clothes that look good AND are utilitarian.
I always find it weird that women are expected to wear practically nothing at fancy functions while men are dressed in layers.
Your (Prada ad) photo explains it perfectly.
I wish I could say comfort, but that would be a lie as I am usually the moron without socks in 10 degree weather. I've never found winter shoes I like, so maybe it's a matter of comfort the other way around?
oh I prefer comfort and warmth! There are plenty of stylish boots that keep your toes warm and looking good - I always find one with a good grip on the bottom so I don't slip in the wet snow.
I'll admit it. I have a pair of Uggs.
I know they're not very nice looking. I know that they're not appropriate for leaving the house. But I know that it feels like walking on a cloud when you put them on, and that they make terrific house slippers/shoes to wear when it's 2 am and it's 20 degrees outside and you really just need to make that 30-second walk to the convenience store to buy a red bull to get you through the rest of the night.
Crocs, though, are never acceptable. Under any circumstances.
PS I left my LJ link in my name (I don't update very often or have much to say but I think it counts as a blog)
PPS sorry for the ridiculously long comment i lack sleep
If it's just cold, I try to do a compromise and layer on the socks. If it's snowed and I have to walk 10 minutes to the downhill subway station through the snow (usually making it a 15 minute walk instead) and back uphill at night...I wear whatever is most weatherproof and warm! I would probably have more options if I didn't forgo leather.
I also mostly wear a parka during the winter months b/c it's impossible to find warm, attractive vegan (non-wool) coats. But so does every other person in NYC so it doesn't really matter.
i wore leggings with ballet flats in january and got frost bite on my little toe! i had to wear my 3 year old pink painted dunlops for 3 weeks because it swelled so much! be warned!!
I don't fashion and comfort are mutually exclusive. There are loads of cute, warm boots out there.
I think it depends on the mood. Sometimes I've worn miniskirt when the temperature was 0ยบ degrees, and sometimes I prefer just comfort and warm clothes, also depends on the occasion.
I'm Norwegian. Nuff said. But I agree with people. it IS possible to combine the two, if only people could start doing that! Dear Norwegians. Please take off your rain and wind repellent Bergans jackets and buy a coat. This is not the skitrack! And if anybody is keen on a UGG bonfire, I'll gladly bring the matches.
